Sam Curran Ruled Out for the Rest of the English Summer After Groin Surgery

Curran to Undergo Surgery on Friday

England all-rounder Sam Curran has been ruled out for the remainder of the English summer after being advised to undergo surgery on a persistent groin injury, dealing a significant blow to his hopes of a Test comeback and leaving England's red-ball balance further depleted.

A statement from Surrey confirmed that the 28-year-old was assessed for the injury and will undergo surgery on Friday, August 21. He will miss Surrey's remaining County Championship fixtures as well as England's white-ball series against Sri Lanka in September.

Sam Curran last played a Test match in 2021

"Sam Curran has been assessed for a groin injury and will undergo surgery on Friday. He will not be available for the remainder of the home season," the ECB said in an injury update.

Test Comeback on Hold

Curran last featured in Test cricket in 2021 but had emerged as a genuine contender for a recall to the Joe Root-led side following Ben Stokes' retirement. Selector Marcus North had previously indicated that Curran could have been in contention for the first Test against Pakistan had he not been managing his fitness during The Hundred, and suggested he could potentially come into consideration for the third Test, scheduled to begin on September 9.

However, further assessment of the groin problem has now ruled out that possibility entirely. North had acknowledged earlier this month that Curran had been carrying "a couple of niggles" due to his high workload, which was why he was not selected for the first two Pakistan Tests.

"I think [it would be] unfair to put him into these first two Tests," North had said. "He's someone our backroom staff and medical team will be working with in the coming weeks to make sure that he potentially becomes an option in the third Test. He's someone that we really value highly, and we see playing a role in the future for us as an allrounder."

Injury Troubles Run Deep

The groin issue has plagued Curran for months. He pulled out of this year's Indian Premier League in March citing the same problem, calling it an injury he had been "battling with a little" and admitting it had "gradually got reasonably worse."

The situation sparked controversy when Kumar Sangakkara, the Rajasthan Royals director of cricket, questioned Curran's absence from the IPL, calling it "disappointing" that he saw the all-rounder playing matches for Surrey despite the IPL season-ending injury.

During The Hundred, where Curran led MI London, he missed one match and did not bowl his full allocation in four of their other seven group games — a clear sign of the ongoing discomfort. Prior to The Hundred, he had featured in the home ODI series against India.

England's All-Rounder Shortage Deepens

Curran's absence further complicates England's team balance as they look to rebuild their Test combination in the aftermath of Stokes' retirement. Without a seam-bowling all-rounder in the squad, England opted against selecting a frontline spinner for the first Test against Pakistan at Headingley. Instead, Dan Lawrence was promoted to No. 6 and asked to contribute with his part-time off-spin as the side sought a different way to balance the XI.

Will Jacks Also Sidelined

England's all-rounder woes are compounded by the unavailability of another Surrey player, Will Jacks, who is currently recovering after undergoing an operation to remove his appendix. Jacks, who performed a similar role during last winter's Ashes, was left out of Surrey's squad for Thursday's County Championship match against Nottinghamshire.

"Will Jacks is currently recovering having had a successful operation to remove his appendix. We will monitor his recovery and assess availability ahead of the Sri Lanka series," the ECB confirmed.

Surrey, who are currently seventh on the Division One County Championship points table, called up Mahipal Lomror this week to help fill the gap left by Jacks and Lawrence — a void that has only widened with Curran's absence.
