Tempers flare as Bavuma and de Kock clash over DRS during South Africa's series-clinching ODI win
Heated exchange mars South Africa's series clincher
Tempers flared at the Wanderers on Monday as South Africa captain Temba Bavuma and wicketkeeper-batter Quinton de Kock were involved in an animated on-field exchange during a crucial DRS review in the second ODI against Australia.
The incident came in the fourth delivery of the 48th over when Lizaad Williams trapped Australia's Xavier Bartlett on the pads. South Africa appealed for LBW but the on-field umpire turned it down, forcing a lengthy on-field discussion about whether to use the review.
Review turns into confrontation
Bavuma eventually opted to take the review and it proved correct. Replays showed three reds and Bartlett, who had made a quickfire 50 off 28 balls, was given out. The dismissal came from a yorker that struck Bartlett in front of the leg after he tried to back away and slash.
Ball-tracking confirmed the ball would have hit the stumps. The review footage also captured an exchange between Bavuma and de Kock, with the two appearing to point fingers at each other in a conversation that looked far from friendly. Marco Jansen intervened to calm de Kock down before the wicketkeeper-batter walked away from the scene.
South Africa seal series
The moment came during an impressive all-round performance that saw South Africa beat Australia by 32 runs to clinch the three-match ODI series. David Miller smashed 142 off 93 balls and Bavuma scored 103 as the hosts posted 365-9.
Australia were bowled out for 333 despite half-centuries from Mitchell Marsh and Travis Head, both scoring 84.
"Another good allround team performance," Bavuma said after the win. "Unbelievable innings by David and then the bowlers as well … there was a lot more spin than was expected. The way the spin complemented our attack it was great."
The two sides meet again in the final ODI on Wednesday, with Australia seeking a consolation win.
