Glamorgan stalwart Colin Ingram announces retirement to take up coaching role

Glamorgan batting stalwart Colin Ingram has announced he will retire from professional cricket at the end of the current season to transition into a coaching role, concluding an illustrious playing career spanning over two decades.

Colin Ingram batting for Glamorgan

The 41-year-old South African is Glamorgan's longest-serving overseas player of the 21st century. Since arriving at Sophia Gardens in 2015, Ingram has amassed over 11,000 runs across all formats for the Welsh county, scoring 31 centuries with a career-best score of 257 not out.

"Throughout my career I've dreamed big, worked hard, made memories, laughed and cried and seen things and places I never thought possible," Ingram said in a statement on social media. "I've had a full crack and left it all out there."

A Master of His Craft

The hard-hitting left-hander, who played 40 limited-overs internationals for South Africa and captained Glamorgan's T20 side in 2018 and 2019, described batting as his personal form of expression throughout his playing days.

"I was fascinated by the game from a young age, and in particular batting," he explained. "At times, when it flows everything slows down and it feels like the most natural, instinctual thing I've ever done. Like my form of art and the bat my paint brush and it's exhilarating."

During his career, Ingram also became a globally sought-after T20 specialist, featuring in major franchise competitions across Australia, India, Pakistan, the Caribbean, the Middle East, South Africa, and the UK's Hundred tournament with the Oval Invincibles.

Stellar County Record

Ingram's numbers for Glamorgan underline his status as a modern county great:

  • First-Class: 5,645 runs at an average of 47
  • List A: 2,630 runs at an average of 62
  • T20: 3,431 runs at an average of 32
  • Bowling & Fielding: 67 wickets with leg-spin and occasional wicket-keeping duties

Ingram was Glamorgan's leading run-scorer in their County Championship promotion-winning campaign and maintained strong form this season, registering centuries against Yorkshire and Warwickshire, alongside crucial innings of 80 and 61 not out in a home victory over Surrey.

Next Chapter in Coaching

Ingram could make his final appearance for the county alongside fellow retiring veteran Chris Cooke in their concluding County Championship fixture against Essex before moving full-time into coaching.

"As one chapter closes the next opens beyond the boundary as I begin my coaching career," Ingram added. "My art is complete but I hope to influence the game positively and inspire players to be the best they can while enjoying their journeys."
