Before the contest got underway, Indian captain Sunil Gavaskar and Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas stepped out to the middle for the toss. In a memorable, light-hearted gesture, Gavaskar jokingly stepped forward and placed his foot over the coin after it landed, producing smiles all around and a relaxed, candid moment between the rival captains.

After winning the toss, India elected to bat first in the 46-overs-a-side encounter, putting up a disciplined total of 188/4 on the board. Wicketkeeper-batter Surinder Khanna led the charge with a top score of 56 off 72 deliveries, while Sandeep Patil added a brisk 43 from 50 balls.

Gavaskar anchored the latter part of the innings, remaining unbeaten on 36 off 55 balls. Opener Ghulam Parkar (22) and Dilip Vengsarkar (14) also contributed, while Shahid Mahboob, Mudassar Nazar, and Sarfraz Nawaz were among the Pakistani bowlers who struck to claim wickets.
