East Zone end 13-year Duleep Trophy drought

East Zone ended a 13-year wait for the Duleep Trophy title after dominating South Zone throughout the five-day final at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The match ended in a draw on Thursday, but East Zone claimed the trophy — their third overall — on the basis of a commanding 372-run first-innings lead.

A patient grind on the final day

The writing was already on the wall at the end of the fourth day, when East Zone went to stumps on 212/5, a mammoth 584 runs ahead. Most of day five was spent further grinding the South Zone bowlers into dust, as East Zone refrained from an overnight declaration.

Kumar Kushagra, the centurion from the first innings, could only add 12 to his score as South Zone's pacers found some nip under overcast skies. Mohammed Siraj hit the right notes, but Md Kounain Quraishi, batting at No. 7, held one end to ensure there was no sudden collapse. The Jharkhand all-rounder, playing just his second first-class match, found company in Anukul Roy, who switched gears with ease and struck a couple of sixes in a Tripurana Vijay over.

Desperate for a breakthrough, South Zone burnt all their reviews by the 76th over, and by lunch both Quraishi and Roy had settled in for the long haul, unbeaten on 76* and 37* respectively. Roy comfortably ticked off a half-century while Quraishi marshalled along, eventually reaching his maiden first-class century in only his second match — off 179 balls. He celebrated the milestone by clubbing Vijay for back-to-back sixes, taking the lead past 750.

A 150-run stand and a prompt declaration

Roy was dismissed in the 99th over, bringing an end to a 150-run stand for the seventh wicket after his knock of 64. The very next over, Kishan declared, leading to handshakes and East Zone's third Duleep title. It was an extension of Kishan's success as a domestic skipper, having already won the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy the previous season.

There was a significant Jharkhand imprint in the win, with Kushagra, Quraishi and Shikhar Mohan all among the runs. Kishan was adjudged Player of the Match for his match aggregate of 350 — the most ever scored in a Duleep Trophy final, surpassing Dinesh Karthik's 333 from the 2010 decider — while South Zone captain Tilak Varma earned the Player of the Series award.

'A first-innings shootout'

Kishan explained East's thinking once they had piled on a huge total. "I think when you are the captain of the team, the first thing is situational awareness. We batted for roughly two days, right? Now, as a unit, we know this is essentially a first-innings shootout. So, our primary task was to take those first 10 wickets and gain that lead. If we have an innings lead (good enough to impose follow-on), why would I want to step back out in the blazing heat," he said.

Kishan cheekily added that he had been a "good leader," calling his time away from the Indian team a "transformation" that has made him calmer and more aware of situations while remaining hungry. The victory extended his unbeaten run as a first-class captain to 16 games.

South's struggles

South's bowlers again struggled to trouble East's batters. Siraj bowled with pace and intensity in short spells but did not get enough support from the rest of the attack. South's batting and team selection also came under focus after the defeat, with the management having left out players such as Karun Nair, Mayank Agarwal and Sai Kishore — replacements who failed to make an impact.
