Lankshear header sinks Wolves as Boro celebrate 150th anniversary in style

Middlesbrough's 150th birthday party finished with all three points as Will Lankshear's second-half header secured a deserved 1-0 Sky Bet Championship victory over Wolves at a sold-out Riverside Stadium on Saturday.

Lankshear, the Tottenham Hotspur-owned striker, struck three minutes before the hour mark, outjumping Hugo Bueno to power Tommy Conway's cross past Jose Sa — his seventh league goal of the season and ninth in all competitions. The win lifted Boro above West Ham into second place, just two points behind leaders Swansea, while Wolves were left second best for long stretches as they slipped to a second league defeat since their relegation last season.

A birthday 150 years in the making

It is 150 years since Middlesbrough were founded to give the cricketers of Middlesbrough Cricket Club something to play in the winter months, and the visit of Wolves was selected as the club's official anniversary fixture.

The occasion was marked in style: prior to kick-off, Boro's fans in the South Stand unfurled a huge mural paying tribute to the club's founding players, six days after a host of former stars returned to the Riverside for a Legacy Game. The current generation appeared inspired by the celebratory mood, making a bright start in front of a packed house.

Lankshear delivers the birthday present

Boro were asking most of the questions from the outset. Lankshear curled an early free-kick over the top before forcing Sa into a smart save down to his left with an angled strike from the left of the penalty area.

Sebastian Berhalter dragged a long-range effort wide and then swung in a cross that Adilson Malanda headed straight at Sa, while Wolves' first-half threat was limited to Marshall Munetsi's 25-yard strike, which Radek Vitek parried away in what was the Boro goalkeeper's first save of the afternoon.

The Teessiders reasserted themselves after the break and claimed the lead their play merited. Conway did superbly to create space on the left-hand side and stand up a cross to the back post, where Lankshear — having peeled behind Bueno — climbed highest to head powerfully home. Per FotMob data, the striker now has seven goals from nine Championship appearances this season.

Wolves well beaten

Wolves offered little in response. Munetsi headed Rodrigo Gomes' cross well wide in a rare foray into the Boro box, and the visitors rarely looked like finding an equaliser as they suffered a second league defeat since dropping out of the Premier League last season.

Boro, by contrast, might have won by more. Ten minutes after the goal, Aidan Morris slipped a perfect slide-rule pass into the path of Berhalter, but his fellow American could only shoot straight at Sa, and two minutes from time substitute Kyle Joseph thumped a header against the underside of the crossbar with the ball bouncing to safety.

Home comforts and a gathering promotion push

The victory continued Boro's love affair with the Riverside. When they beat Norwich City 4-3 in September, sealed by a stoppage-time winner, it was their fifth consecutive home league win — their best such run since they won seven in a row in March 2023 — and their momentum shows no sign of slowing on the big occasions.

Crucially, the three points moved Boro above a West Ham side that was expected to go straight back up to the Premier League, and to within two points of leaders Swansea.

Post-match reaction from Middlesbrough head coach Kim Hellberg and Wolves counterpart Cesar Peixoto was to follow at the time of writing.
