Sydney derby opens A-League season with goalless stalemate
Derby delivers little as new season begins
Sydney FC and Western Sydney Wanderers opened the 2026-27 A-League season with a 0-0 draw at Allianz Stadium, in a derby that produced few clear chances and little attacking fluency.

Western Sydney's Awan Lual was forced off with an injury early in the match. The first half offered little else beyond a flashpoint following Miguel Di Pizio's booking. Di Pizio had the clearest opportunity after the break, but sent his effort over in the 53rd minute. Atiya Waraga later sliced wide for the visitors, while Sydney did not register a shot on target until the 91st minute.
Few openings, familiar frustrations
The teams managed only three shots on target between them. The expected-goals figures reflected the limited threat, with Sydney recording 0.57 and Western Sydney 0.94.
The result extended the Wanderers' winless A-League run to eight matches, their longest such streak since a 10-game spell in 2019. Sydney have kept 13 clean sheets since the start of last season, the most in the competition, but their goalless outing continued a frustrating run at Allianz Stadium: they have drawn their last three league games there and are winless in seven at the venue.
Sydney did preserve one positive derby record, remaining unbeaten against Western Sydney in their last five league meetings at Allianz Stadium.
