PSG-Lyon moved to Monday as Paris braces for protests

PSG-Lyon rescheduled after police security warning

Paris Saint-Germain’s Ligue 1 match against Lyon has been moved from Sunday to Monday after French police prohibited the fixture from taking place on its original date. The match at the Parc des Princes will now kick off at 20:30 local time, the Ligue de Football Professionnel announced on Friday.

Protests and packed security schedule

Authorities are preparing a major security operation for demonstrations planned for Saturday. About 550,000 people joined protests the previous Saturday over rising fuel prices, education standards and the cost of living. Marches in Paris and other major cities, backed by unions and student groups, were accompanied by incidents of violence, looting and damage.

The weekend’s security demands are further complicated by Sunday’s NFL game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and New Orleans Saints at the Stade de France in Saint-Denis, around 10 kilometres from Place de la Bastille, where protest marches are expected to begin.

Football scheduling has already been affected: Toulouse’s Ligue 1 home fixture against Troyes was shifted from Saturday to Sunday at the request of authorities.

Top-of-the-table clash now overlaps with Ballon d’Or ceremony

The postponement means the match will take place on the same day as the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. PSG’s injured Ousmane Dembele, the 2025 award winner, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia are among the contenders.

At the time of the report, Lyon led the Ligue 1 standings on 14 points, ahead of reigning French and European champions PSG on goal difference after seven matches.
