BCCI Introduces Stricter Rule for IPL 2026 to Limit Substitute Players' Movement on the Field

BCCI Introduces Stricter Rule for IPL 2026 to Limit Substitute Players' Movement on the Field

In a move to tighten on-field discipline during Indian Premier League (IPL) matches, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has introduced a new rule for IPL 2026 that significantly curbs the movement of substitute and benched players. According to a report from Cricbuzz, only the 16 players officially named in the match squad are permitted on the field, while all others must remain in the dugout. This change aims to reduce unnecessary activity around the playing area, although the BCCI has not provided an official explanation for the update.

New Rules for Substitutes and On-Field Assistance

Under the revised guidelines, players not part of the playing 16 are prohibited from stepping onto the field for any reason, including routine tasks such as carrying drinks or delivering messages to the on-field team. Only a maximum of five additional players, identifiable by wearing bibs, are allowed to move near the boundary at any given time. The rest must stay confined to the dugout and cannot venture between the boundary line and the LED advertising boards.

Team sources elaborated on the instructions, stating, "Instructions have been passed to us only recently that all substitutes cannot move around during the match. They are also not allowed to carry drinks onto the field. Only the 16 named in the team for the match can do so. In addition to that, only five outside the playing XI can move around. The others can sit in the dugout, but cannot move between the boundary line and LED advertising boards."

Implications for IPL Teams

This rule change marks a departure from previous practices where larger IPL squads—up to 25 players—often saw multiple non-playing members assisting on the field. The BCCI's decision enforces stricter adherence to existing playing conditions, aiming to prevent overcrowding and maintain better control over match proceedings. While the exact rationale behind the policy remains undisclosed, it is widely viewed as an effort to streamline operations and enhance the overall professionalism of IPL games.

The regulation will apply uniformly to all IPL franchises starting from the 2026 season, ensuring consistency across the league. As teams adapt to these limitations, it could influence strategies for squad management and on-field support during high-stakes matches.
