Pundits demand changes after historic upset

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting described the nine-wicket loss in Darwin as a "very embarrassing defeat" and said Australia must begin regenerating the Test side before the second Test in Mackay.

"Look, I’m the last one who wants to make change. As a captain or as a player, I wanted to keep the group together," Ponting told Channel 7. "It has to get to a bad point before I start saying you ought to leave somebody out. But there had been enough evidence for me coming here to suggest that they weren’t going to lose anything or much at all by starting that regeneration, by maybe bringing in another opener, by maybe bringing in someone at No. 3. And I think if they lose here, then I think that has to happen."

Matthew Hayden backed reshaping the batting order, suggesting Sam Konstas and Matt Renshaw should return and that Travis Head should move down from the opener's role, while questioning Alex Carey's position at No.5.

Mark Waugh called it potentially the biggest upset he could remember in Australia. "The West Indies beat Australia at the Gabba three or four years ago – that was an upset. But this one, given their best two bowlers, Nahid Rana and Shoriful Islam, are not playing, the rankings, the Australian team back at full strength, it’s a big one, this one," he said.

Australia captain Pat Cummins was blunt after the match. "Probably that day one. You know, I thought our preparation was pretty much spot on. I thought it was excellent. So, no excuses. They played really well. I thought the day one wicket was doing a little bit early, but obviously got to try and find a way to bat a little bit longer than we did, and then, just couldn't penetrate with the ball."

"Yeah, they did. I think they outplayed us in all facets, really. I thought they were really patient and quite disciplined. And, yeah, once we were behind, it was really hard to get back," Cummins added. He praised Josh Hazlewood for reaching 300 Test wickets with six wickets in the match and credited Cameron Green's 104 for resisting an innings defeat.

Shanto hails team effort

Bangladesh Test skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto said the win was the biggest in Bangladesh cricket history.

"I think we have a lot of big wins in all three formats of Bangladesh cricket. But I would say that so far, this is the biggest win for Bangladesh and there was a lot of hard work behind it. So I think this is the biggest win in the history of Bangladesh," Shanto said.

He credited the entire squad, highlighting Tanzid Hasan Tamim's maiden Test hundred, Mehidy Hasan Miraz's all-round performance and contributions from the lower order including Hasan Mahmud, Taijul Islam, Taskin Ahmed and Ebadot Hossain. Shanto said Bangladesh had focused on process rather than outside noise after a poor warm-up against Cricket Australia XI.
