Bangladesh make historic breakthrough in Australia

Bangladesh have strengthened their push for a place in the World Test Championship final after defeating Australia by nine wickets in Darwin. The victory was Bangladesh’s first-ever Test win on Australian soil and triggered a significant reshuffle in the WTC 2025-27 race.

Australia remain at the top of the standings with 84 points from nine Tests, including seven wins and two defeats. However, their points percentage has fallen from 87.50% to 77.78%, narrowing the gap to the teams behind them.

Bangladesh climb to fourth

Bangladesh moved firmly into contention after improving their points percentage from 58.33% to 66.67%. They now have 40 points from five Tests, with three wins, one defeat and one draw. South Africa sit second on 75%, while New Zealand are third on 72.22%.

The visitors produced an impressive all-round performance in Darwin. Tanzid Hasan’s century provided the platform with the bat, while Hasan Mahmud and Mehidy Hasan Miraz helped dismantle Australia’s batting line-up. Bangladesh then completed a chase of just 57 runs for the loss of one wicket.

India remain in a precarious fifth place

India are still fifth with 52 points from nine Tests. Their record of four wins, four defeats and one draw gives them a points percentage of 48.15%, leaving them vulnerable in a tightly contested mid-table battle.

Sri Lanka are sixth on 41.67% after four Tests, while England, Pakistan and the West Indies occupy the bottom three positions. England have a 24.36% points percentage, followed by Pakistan on 22.22% and the West Indies on 20.83%.

WTC 2025-27 standings

Australia lead the table, but Bangladesh’s result has made the race for the top two places considerably more open. With the cycle still underway, the reduction in Australia’s lead and Bangladesh’s rapid rise could prove crucial in the race for the WTC final.
