Historic chase caps four days of dominance in Darwin

Bangladesh sealed a 9-wicket win over Australia in the first Test at Marrara Oval, Darwin, chasing 57 in 14.2 overs to record their maiden Test victory on Australian soil and only their second against Australia overall.

Australia, who won the toss and batted first, were dismissed for 198. Steve Smith made 71, but Hasan Mahmud set the tone on day one with a six-wicket haul, finishing the match with 9 for 111. Bangladesh replied with 426, built around Tanzid Hasan Tamim 101, Najmul Hossain Shanto 84 and a crucial 65 from Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

Ahead on the fourth morning with Australia 161 for 4 and six wickets in hand, Bangladesh turned the game with off-spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraz. He removed Alex Carey, who edged a dipping delivery after pushing forward, and Beau Webster, who was trapped on the stumps by a ball that went straight on.

Pat Cummins fell inside-edging Mehidy to forward short leg, and Taskin Ahmed broke a 43-run stand by removing Mitchell Starc for a nick behind. Cameron Green carried on to make 104 from 201 balls, his third Test century and first in Australia, before falling to Hasan Mahmud, who bowled him after he had survived the previous evening when the ball hit the stumps without dislodging the bails.

Mehidy completed a 15th Test five-wicket haul when he trapped Nathan Lyon lbw for 5-66. Australia were all out for 284, leaving Bangladesh 57 to win.

First-innings centurion Tanzid Hasan Tamim fell for a duck to Josh Hazlewood, who finished with 6-89 in the match, but Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam saw Bangladesh home without further loss. Haque was unbeaten on 30 and Islam on 25 as a large Bangladeshi contingent cheered the landmark.
