Lauren Davidson fills Caroline Weir void as Scotland edge past Czechs into Sweden tie

Davidson shines as Scotland overcome Weir absence

Lauren Davidson was the standout performer as Scotland set up a glamour World Cup play-off tie with Sweden, beating the Czech Republic 3-2 in Paisley to complete a 5-2 aggregate victory. The Brann forward scored the equaliser after the Czechs' early shock lead, and Kathleen McGovern added Scotland's second before the visitors' cause was further undermined by their own struggles to contain the Scots.

The result was achieved without captain Caroline Weir, who pulled out with an injury picked up in the warm-up. Chelsea captain Erin Cuthbert was introduced at half-time for just her second game of the season.

'Like a woman possessed'

Cuthbert praised her teammate after the five-goal thriller. "Lauren Davidson was on fire," Cuthbert told BBC Scotland. "If you give her the ball, she'll make something happen. She was brilliant. She honestly looked like she was possessed."

Davidson, who has started the last five internationals, operated both on the wing and in a central role, and was partnered up front with McGovern after a tweak to the formation. Her goal was her fourth for Scotland and her third in 2026. Her domestic form has also been strong: she has six goals and six assists in 17 Toppserien appearances this season for Brann, who hold a 10-point lead after 18 games. Figures are from the 2026 Toppserien season as of the fetch date.

Contract talk and future plans

Davidson, whose contract with the Norwegian club expires in December, hinted that this could be her final year in Norway. "It's my first time moving away from home," she said. "I wanted to take baby steps instead of just moving and throwing myself maybe down to England, but I've loved every moment of it. My contract is up in December but I think I made the right move taking A-B rather than A-C."

Concern over Weir fitness

Cuthbert admitted she was worried about her friend, who had to withdraw. "Caroline doesn't go down easy," she said. "When she feels like she can't continue, normally I'm a wee bit worried. Hopefully she's fit for the Sweden games." Scotland head coach Melissa Andreatta described the withdrawal as "precautionary" but gave no further detail. The concern is significant: Scotland have relied heavily on Weir and Cuthbert, and in the first leg in Pardubice, it was again experienced players who carried the team.

Sweden double-header looms

Scotland will host Sweden at St Mirren Park in Paisley on 1 December, with the return fixture in Stockholm four days later. Sweden are back-to-back World Cup semi-finalists, making the tie a formidable challenge. Scotland will need their key players fully fit to progress.
