Max Verstappen Red Bull renewal freezes F1 driver market for 2027

Formula 1's annual summer "silly season" has ground to an abrupt halt ahead of the Dutch Grand Prix, as Max Verstappen’s commitment to Red Bull Racing through 2030 triggered widespread stability across the grid for 2027.

Max Verstappen commits his future to Red Bull Racing

The four-time world champion put an end to persistent rumours linking him to Mercedes and McLaren by signing a long-term extension. With Verstappen anchored in Milton Keynes, the primary domino that could have triggered major driver movement across top-tier teams has been removed.

Leading Contenders Lock Down Core Lineups

The front-running teams have secured their driver pairings well into the future. McLaren retain Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri on multi-year agreements, while Ferrari confirmed Charles Leclerc on a fresh contract alongside Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes remain settled with George Russell and runaway championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who has impressed in his rookie season.

At Red Bull, Isack Hadjar is widely expected to retain his seat alongside Verstappen once recovered from a wrist injury. Team principal Laurent Mekies previously stated it would be "logical" to keep Hadjar in place given his strong underlying pace relative to previous teammates.

Further down the grid, Williams announced contract extensions for Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz, while Audi will enter the third year of long-term deals with Gabriel Bortoleto and Nico Hulkenberg. Cadillac have also secured veterans Sergio Pérez and Valtteri Bottas through the 2027 campaign.

Alonso Weighs Longevity as Alpine and Racing Bulls Stand Pat

The remaining focal point centers on Fernando Alonso at Aston Martin. Alonso, who turned 45 over the summer break, acknowledged he is approaching the twilight of his racing career while continuing to assess the 2026 regulations.

"I said it many times, the (set of) regulations is what it is, it’s not the best (or) the most fun cars to drive," Alonso stated at Zandvoort. "But it’s still my life, and Formula 1 has been and will always be my life. My heart is here. I will be with this team in one role or another for the long term."

Aston Martin are keen to retain Alonso alongside Lance Stroll if the Spaniard decides to continue. Meanwhile, Alpine are positioned to keep Pierre Gasly alongside Franco Colapinto following a solid campaign, while Racing Bulls look set to retain Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad despite pressure from F2 points leader Nikola Tsolov and Yuki Tsunoda.

Haas Evaluates Prospects as Sole Outlier

Haas remains the only team actively evaluating its options for 2027. Esteban Ocon has struggled to match sophomore driver Ollie Bearman, who has scored 18 of the American squad's 21 points this season. Haas has conducted private tests with Ryo Hirakawa and reigning F2 champion Leonardo Fornaroli, and will run Ferrari junior Rafael Camara in coming weeks.

"We’re not in any rush," team principal Ayao Komatsu confirmed. "We’re focused on our two drivers, Ollie and Esteban, trying to get the best out of them."

With up to 10 of the 11 teams likely to field unchanged rosters, the 2027 F1 driver market is set to be one of the most stable in modern championship history.
