Pep Guardiola Dismisses Exit Rumors and Defines Success Ahead of FA Cup Final
Guardiola Addresses Future at Manchester City
Amid growing speculation that Pep Guardiola might leave Manchester City at the end of the current season, the Catalan manager has issued his strongest signal yet that he intends to stay. Despite rumors of an early departure, Guardiola dismissed suggestions that the upcoming FA Cup final would be his last in charge.
"No way. I have one more year [on my] contract,"Guardiola stated firmly on Friday, referring to the contract he signed in November 2024 which runs until 2027.
Reflecting on his decade-long tenure at the Etihad Stadium, Guardiola has secured 19 trophies, including six Premier League titles and a Champions League trophy. When asked if his reign defined greatness, he replied, "Yeah, of course, 19 titles in 10 years is not bad... fighting for 20 in 10 years – it's not bad, honestly."
Defining a Successful Season
As City prepare for the FA Cup final against Chelsea, Guardiola emphasized that the season has been a success regardless of the outcome of the Premier League title race. While Arsenal are poised to secure the crown, City are looking to add a second domestic cup to their tally after winning the EFL Cup.
Guardiola noted that while trophies often define a season, they aren't the only metric: "The value of the season depends on the trophies you lift. Sometimes you lift trophies and the season is successful. Sometimes you lift them, and the season is still really, really bad. I said a few weeks ago, this season has been really good, really very good."
Challenges and the Road to Wembley
City are making history as the first team to reach four consecutive FA Cup finals, though they have suffered defeats in the 2024 and 2025 finals. They now seek to avoid a third straight final loss, a feat previously only matched by Chelsea between 2020 and 2022.
Preparation for the final has been grueling, with City playing Crystal Palace on Wednesday, while Chelsea have enjoyed seven days of rest. Guardiola acknowledged the disadvantage but viewed it as a test of a "big club." He remarked, "It is not the perfect scenario to prepare for the final because we have not trained since the last game... but the big clubs are defined where you are in more difficult circumstances."
Chelsea, meanwhile, enter the match struggling with a 13-game winless run against City. Interim boss Calum McFarlane has pinned hopes on academy graduate Cole Palmer to break the streak, defending the England international's form despite a season hampered by injuries.
