Inter and Milan Track Frankfurt's 15-Year-Old Niko Ilicevic as Barcelona, Real Madrid and Man City Circle
Milan Clubs Join the Queue for Frankfurt's Teenage Playmaker
Inter and Milan are both keeping a close watch on Eintracht Frankfurt's teenage attacking midfielder Niko Ilicevic, with Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City also tracking the 15-year-old, according to reports in Italy.
Calciomercato.com, citing Sky Sport Deutschland, reports that the two Serie A giants view the youngster as one for the future rather than an immediate first-team option. Ilicevic has been part of Frankfurt's academy since he was eight years old, and the Bundesliga club are determined to secure him on his first professional contract when he turns 16.
As it happens, that birthday — 31 October — falls on the very day Milan and Inter meet in the Derby della Madonnina, adding a neat subplot to a saga that could run right up to the moment he becomes eligible for a cross-border move.
An Impressive Record in Germany's Youth Teams
Ilicevic has already caught the eye at international level. The playmaker has scored two goals in three appearances for Germany's Under-17 side, having previously netted once in two games for the Under-15s and twice in seven outings for the Under-16s.
That goalscoring record from midfield is precisely why some of Europe's biggest clubs have added him to their scouting lists well before he has played a minute of senior football.
FIFA Rules Limit Where He Can Go — and When
Any interested club faces a significant regulatory hurdle. Under FIFA's rules on the international transfer of minors, Ilicevic could only move abroad within the European Union once he turns 16 — which would keep him eligible for a switch to Italy or Spain from his birthday, but not to England. That provision would rule out a move to Manchester City until he is 18, giving Inter, Milan, Barcelona and Real Madrid a theoretical head start if the player and his family decide to leave Frankfurt.
For now, Frankfurt's priority is clear: tie down one of the brightest products of their academy before rivals can open formal talks.
Football Runs in the Family
Ilicevic comes from a footballing bloodline. His uncle, Ivo Ilicevic, was a winger who turned out for Nürnberg, Hamburg, Kaiserslautern, Bochum, Greuther Fürth and Darmstadt in Germany, as well as Anzhi in Russia and Kairat Almaty in Kazakhstan, and also scored once in nine appearances for Croatia.
Whether the younger Ilicevic follows a similarly nomadic career path remains to be seen, but the level of interest already generated suggests the coming weeks — and the date of 31 October in particular — will be closely watched in Milan, Barcelona, Madrid and Manchester.
