Lewis Hamilton admits title race defeat as Kimi Antonelli charges towards world championship

Lewis Hamilton has conceded his Formula 1 world title hopes are over after praising championship leader Kimi Antonelli, declaring there is "no stopping" the Italian prodigy following his commanding victory at the Spanish Grand Prix.

Kimi Antonelli

Hamilton, driving in his second season for Ferrari after departing Mercedes, was forced to retire on lap six at the Madring circuit due to a brake failure. The outcome left the seven-time world champion 101 points adrift of the young Italian who replaced him at the Silver Arrows.

"There’s no stopping him and Mercedes this year," Hamilton admitted after the race. "They’ve done a phenomenal job and they deserve it."

Antonelli's Mercedes teammate, George Russell, remains second in the standings but sits 81 points behind with nine race weekends remaining. Hamilton, who earlier claimed his first victory for Ferrari in Barcelona, maintained optimism despite the setback: "I think we have a good car. We’ve had a pretty decent car, a good car this weekend and we will continue to try and improve it and we have better results coming in the future."

Controversy Under the Virtual Safety Car

Antonelli took victory in Spain after capitalizing on a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period that severely disadvantaged McLaren's pole-sitter Lando Norris. The VSC was deployed just as Norris crossed the pit entry line, allowing the chasing Antonelli to pit immediately and gain track position.

With overtaking virtually impossible around the circuit, Norris was left frustrated in third place and called for rule revisions regarding pit stops under neutralised conditions.

"It just hurts because there was nothing more I could do as a driver. I got pole, I led the race, and to lose it for nothing in my control is not how a race should be won," Norris stated. "There are things that can be changed to make it more simple, and more fair. We could be covered for at least one lap and that allows us all the opportunity to do a pit-stop, or the pit entry could be blocked. This needs to be part of a wider discussion."

From Lap-Sitting to the Brink of History

Antonelli's march towards becoming Formula 1's youngest-ever world champion fulfills years of extraordinary potential. His father, Marco Antonelli—a former touring car driver—recalled the moment he first realised his son had generational talent when Kimi was just 10 years old, sitting on his lap in a Lamborghini sports car at Italy's Adria circuit.

"I couldn't see the track because he was in front of me with a helmet on," Marco Antonelli explained. "In the end, I pushed like I was alone and I arrived at the braking point at the end of the straight, 320km/h, braked very hard and at the limit. The car had a lot of oversteer. Kimi controlled the oversteer perfectly, then I went on the throttle, Kimi finished the oversteer, changed gear, and went. When I saw the video, 10 years old, on my leg, oversteer, everything perfect, I said: 'Maybe he has something special.'"

Having been signed to the Mercedes junior program at age 11 by talent scout Gwen Lagrue, Antonelli rapidly ascended through the ranks, dominating Formula 4 in 2022 and Formula Regional in 2023. When Hamilton opted to sign with Ferrari ahead of the 2025 season, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff wasted no time promoting Antonelli directly into the race seat.

Reflecting on Antonelli's initial Formula 1 test program, Mercedes trackside engineering director Andrew Shovlin noted: "If you compare with other drivers we've seen in an F1 car for the first time, the best I'd ever seen until then was George [Russell]. You suddenly saw someone who was quite similar. With Kimi, he took a couple of runs to work out how the car behaved and then he'd be more or less on the pace."

With a massive championship advantage and rivals openly acknowledging Mercedes' dominance, Antonelli now stands on the threshold of making Formula 1 history.
