Taylor Swift Played Her Only 2016 Concert at the US Grand Prix — and F1 Never Looked Back

One night in Austin that changed the Grand Prix weekend

This year marks a decade since Taylor Swift took to the stage at Circuit of The Americas during the 2016 United States Grand Prix, delivering what would prove to be her only public concert of that entire year — and, in hindsight, an early blueprint for the entertainment-led race weekend that Formula 1 now takes for granted.

For Swift, the Austin appearance was only her second performance of 2016 and her sole public show, following her appearance at the Grammy Awards in February. After the enormous 1989 world tour in 2015, the pop star had wanted time to rest and recover — but an invitation from COTA's race organisers was enough to spark her interest.

A Texas-sized crossover

The United States Grand Prix has long leaned into its Texas roots, from cowboy hats in the paddock to the special Stetson hats presented to the top three drivers on the podium. As an artist who began her career as a country star, Swift was seen as the ideal headliner — and ticket sales reflected the appetite for the crossover.

A Saturday general admission ticket bought access to both qualifying and the huge stage show later that evening, giving racing fans who were also 'Swifties' — and there are plenty of them — the ultimate double bill. The 15-song set drew an estimated crowd of around 80,000 people, delivering a welcome boost for the organisers.

Long before Drive to Survive brought a wave of new viewers to the sport, Swift's appearance offered a live demonstration of how a major entertainment act could pull fresh audiences into Formula 1.

How COTA became a blueprint for other circuits

In only its fifth year, Circuit of The Americas had secured one of the biggest music stars on the planet to perform across the race weekend — offering fans a ticket to top-level racing action and a headline show in the evening.

“I think at that moment, not many Formula 1 tracks were doing the ‘concert model’ and a lot of circuits were focused on more of the racing side, as opposed to the whole fan event that goes around it — which is very much the norm nowadays,” F1 journalist Luke Smith of The Athletic told F1.com.
“COTA was very much ahead of the curve, and it managed to tap into that younger, more female audience that, again, in F1 nowadays is very much the norm,” Smith continued. “We have seen that big shift happen since the Liberty takeover in the last five to ten years. The boom of Drive to Survive has played a big part in that, but I think that the route of having the concert did help open F1 up to a wave of new fans who perhaps came to the circuit chiefly for the concert and then became interested in F1 because of that.
“COTA has been one of the tracks leading the way on that. They do really put a lot of effort into ensuring that it is a festival around what is happening on the circuit and it’s not just a race, which is a blueprint and a model that a lot of other circuits have followed.”

The Swifties of the F1 paddock

Swift's pull has been felt far and wide in the paddock in the years since. Several drivers have publicly shown their support, whether by slipping her hits into their pre-race playlists or heading to the Eras Tour with family and friends.

Pierre Gasly and Charles Leclerc both attended the 2024 tour date in Milan with their respective partners, with each driver declaring himself a fan of her music. At one of Swift's Wembley shows in London, George Russell showed his support alongside his niece and even sported a pink fluffy cowboy hat for the occasion.

Ollie Bearman, meanwhile, had five Swift songs in an Apple Music playlist he shared earlier this year, including ...Ready For It?, Bad Blood, Cruel Summer and Love Story.

A template that stuck

Nearly a decade on, concerts have become an established part of many Grand Prix weekends, while Formula 1's audience has continued to expand around the world. Swift's night at COTA remains an early glimpse of how music and motorsport could combine to build a far wider fan experience — a formula the sport has been refining ever since.
