Tom Westley steps down as Essex captain after seven seasons

Westley brings seven-year captaincy to an end

Tom Westley has stepped down as Essex captain after seven seasons in charge, saying the time is right for the county to pursue a new direction.

The 37-year-old, Essex’s longest-serving player, leaves the role after a difficult campaign in which the county finished eighth in Division One of the County Championship. Essex are currently 25 points clear of Leicestershire, but their top-flight status remains uncertain while Leicestershire appeal a 27-point deduction for breaching pitch regulations.

If Leicestershire win the appeal and recover all 27 points, Essex would be relegated. A rain-affected draw with Glamorgan in Essex’s final match left the club having to wait for the outcome of the disciplinary process.

‘My greatest honour’

Westley described leading Essex as his “greatest honour”, but acknowledged that his personal contribution with the bat had fallen short this season.

“Personally, I feel that my biggest value is scoring runs and contributing to Essex victories, something which I haven't been able to achieve this year,” Westley told the club website.

“For that reason, I feel now is the right time for a change and for the club to explore a new direction,” he added.

A trophy-winning tenure

Westley succeeded Ryan ten Doeschate as Essex captain in January 2020, when the county were the reigning champions. Although the scheduled County Championship was cancelled that year because of the Covid-19 pandemic, Westley led Essex to victory in the shortened red-ball competition that replaced it, the Bob Willis Trophy.

Essex subsequently recorded four successive top-four finishes from 2022 to 2024 before slipping to sixth and then becoming embroiled in another relegation fight. The change in leadership gives Westley the chance to concentrate on his batting, while Essex begin the search for a new captain and await the final ruling on their Championship status.
