Jai Hind, Jai Sindh: A Love Story brings Partition's unhealed Sindhi wound to the big screen

A love story anchored in a nation's defining tragedy

The Partition of 1947 is usually remembered through stories of borders, migration and separation. But for filmmaker Sammy Nanwani, the wound it left on the Sindhi community is deeply personal — and it is precisely that pain that his upcoming film, Jai Hind, Jai Sindh: A Love Story, seeks to put on screen.

“They lost their land, their property, their parents and their children during Partition. Many Sindhis still carry that pain. That deep cut is still not healed,” Nanwani says of a community whose experience of displacement is often overshadowed in mainstream retellings of 1947.

A story every Indian should watch

Directed by Indrajit Lankesh, the film is at its heart a passionate love story set against the backdrop of Partition, while weaving together the experiences of a grandfather and his grandson across generations. Through those parallel journeys, the narrative examines the human cost of Partition and the emotions that continued to reverberate long after the borders were drawn.

“Jai Hind Jai Sindh is a story every Indian should watch. There is so much of our history and our journey in it. The film draws on the sense of this shared history and belonging that is so beautifully highlighted in our national anthem as well. We're sure it will bring that chapter of history closer to audiences across India, particularly the younger generation,” Nanwani adds.

Stellar ensemble and debut leads

The film marks the debut of newcomers Akaisha Vats and Gauravv Dhingra, whose performances have already drawn appreciation, and its music is being well received. It also boasts a formidable supporting cast, including Mahesh Manjrekar, Jaya Prada, Chhaya Kadam, Rahul Dev, Vikram Kochhar, Zarina Wahab, Amit Behl and others.

The makers are eyeing a pan-India release soon, with hopes that the film will not only entertain but also connect younger audiences to a chapter of history that remains central to the nation's — and the Sindhi community's — shared identity.
