Isak and Gyokeres fire Sweden to winning Nations League return

Sweden’s star forwards deliver on Nations League return

Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres scored as Sweden began life back in Nations League League B with a 2-1 win over Romania in Stockholm.

Viktor Gyokeres celebrating for Sweden

Sweden made a rapid start, with Sebastian Nanasi forcing Ionut Radu into an early save. The hosts took the lead in the 20th minute when Isak peeled away from Virgil Ghita, collected Yasin Ayari’s through ball and powered his finish past Radu.

Romania responded nine minutes later. Dennis Man brought the visitors level after lifting the ball over Victor Lindelof before volleying beyond the reach of Viktor Johansson.

Sweden restored their advantage shortly before half-time. Gyokeres reacted quickest after Lucas Bergvall’s shot was saved, driving the rebound into the net to put the hosts back in front.

Elliot Stroud appeared to have extended Sweden’s lead early in the second half with a looping finish into the top-right corner. However, a VAR review ruled out the goal because of a handball by Isak in the build-up.

Romania threatened again, but neither side could find another goal. The victory sent Sweden to the top of their group and marked a positive return to League B after their promotion from the previous Nations League campaign.

Different club form, same international impact

The goals offered contrasting boosts for Sweden’s two leading forwards. Isak has started the season strongly at Liverpool, scoring four times in seven appearances across all competitions, while Gyokeres entered the match without a goal for Arsenal after five appearances.

Isak was Sweden’s most influential attacker, registering a game-high three shots and seven touches in the opposition penalty area. Gyokeres had fewer opportunities, managing one shot and 31 touches, but his rebound proved decisive.
