Abell and Lammonby put Somerset in command

Tom Abell and Tom Lammonby produced a record-breaking assault on Surrey’s depleted bowling attack as Somerset surged to 691-8 on day three of their County Championship Division One match at Taunton.

Somerset’s total is their highest ever against Surrey and gives them a first-innings lead of 269 runs, with two wickets still in hand. The hosts are on five points, while Surrey have four.

Abell finished unbeaten on 284 from 385 balls, striking 29 fours and seven sixes. Lammonby made 229 from 359 deliveries, with 28 fours and four sixes, before being dismissed by Dan Worrall.

A record fourth-wicket stand

The pair shared 334 for the fourth wicket, setting a new Somerset record. Their partnership surpassed the previous mark of 313, which had been set by Abell and James Rew against Nottinghamshire last season.

Lammonby reached his maiden first-class double century after passing his previous best of 133. Abell followed him to a double hundred for the first time, capping a prolific season with what was described as the best form of his career.

Surrey’s fielding compounded their problems. Rory Burns dropped Lammonby at slip when he was on 106, while Adam Thomas spilled a straightforward chance offered by Abell on 87.

Surrey missing key options

Surrey were without Rahul Chahar and Dan Lawrence, with Chahar unavailable and Lawrence absent after an England call-up. Their replacement, Ralphie Albert, was attacked by Abell, who hit four successive sixes from one over.

Mahipal Lomror took four wickets but could not prevent Somerset from passing 500 and moving well beyond Surrey’s first-innings score of 422, which featured 139 from Lawrence, 72 from Sibley and 64 from Foakes.

Somerset’s dominance continued after Lammonby’s departure. James Rew made one, Archie Vaughan scored 26 and Craig Overton fell quickly, while Lewis Gregory was dismissed cheaply. Abell then joined Migael Pretorius in a devastating ninth-wicket stand worth 150 from only 105 balls, with Pretorius making a 52-ball fifty.

The result elsewhere has already confirmed Somerset as runners-up for the seventh time this century, regardless of the outcome in Taunton. The county are still seeking their first Championship title.
