The Formula 1 Commission has approved a series of significant regulatory adjustments for upcoming seasons, headlined by a reduction in total Grand Prix race distances and revised disruption rules designed to prevent rain-shortened races.

Grand Prix Distances Shortened for 2027
Chaired by FIA Single-Seater Director Nikolas Tombazis and Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali at the FIA offices in London, the Commission agreed to reduce total Grand Prix race distances from 305km down to 290km starting in 2027. The tweak, which corresponds to a cut of two to three laps per race, aligns with upcoming refinements to the Power Unit regulations regarding fuel flow.
Overhaul for Weather Disruptions and Red Flags
In a move aimed at giving trackside spectators and television viewers the best possible opportunity to see complete races, the Commission approved substantial changes to how disrupted sessions are handled:
- Three-Hour Window Removed: The existing rule capping total event time at three hours from start to finish—regardless of red flags or stoppages—will be scrapped.
- Racing Time Preserved: The traditional limit of two hours of actual green-flag racing will remain in effect.
- Hard Cut-Off Introduced: A defined hard stop time will be established for the conclusion of all racing activities on a given day.
- Practice Flexibility: Greater leeway has been introduced to extend Free Practice sessions if they are disrupted by red flags or adverse weather.
Gearbox Homologation Dropped
Following discussions with manufacturer working groups and recommendations from the Sporting Advisory Committee, gearbox homologation will be removed for 2027 to ensure component suppliers retain full development freedom.
The Commission also agreed minor updates to the 2026 Sporting and Financial Regulations, alongside tweaks to the 2027 Technical Regulations. All approved measures now await formal ratification by the FIA World Motor Sport Council (WMSC).
