BCCI confirms Goa as venue for IPL 2027 auction, bidding war set for mid-December
Goa to host IPL 2027 auction in mid-December
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed Goa as the venue for this year's IPL auction, bringing the player bidding war back on Indian soil after three consecutive editions held overseas.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia told Cricbuzz on Wednesday (September 23) that the auction will be held in mid-December. While the exact date is yet to be officially revealed, it has been finalised, and Saikia indicated it could take place between December 14 and 16.
With the 2027 edition expected to be a small auction — as opposed to the blockbuster mega sales that reshuffle entire squads — the event is set to be a one-day affair rather than a drawn-out, multi-session spectacle.
Return to India after three years in the Gulf
Over the last three years, the IPL auction travelled to the Middle East, with Dubai, Jeddah and Abu Dhabi all playing host. The BCCI has now bucked that trend, with the Governing Council recently deciding to hold the event in India in response to requests from a majority of the 10 IPL franchises.
Cricbuzz was the first to report that this year's auction would be staged in India, and the confirmation of Goa as the host city puts that plan into action. The move could prove temporary, however — next year, when the mega auction falls due, the event may well head overseas again.
Five-star setting for a one-day bidding battle
The BCCI's first priority in zeroing in on a host city was finding a five-star hotel capable of accommodating over 100 guests, representing the large delegations that the 10 franchises bring to the auction table. With Goa now confirmed as the venue, the board has presumably found a suitable property in the coastal state to stage the mid-December showdown.
With the venue locked in and the window narrowed to December 14-16, attention will now turn to the official announcement of the date and the player list that will go under the hammer.
