Spain Boss Optimistic About Lamine Yamal's Fitness for World Cup 2026 Opening Match

Spain Head Coach Expresses Optimism Over Lamine Yamal’s Recovery

Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has shared positive news regarding Lamine Yamal’s fitness ahead of the 2026 World Cup. Yamal, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, is expected to be available for the team’s opening match against Cape Verde on June 9th, according to De la Fuente. The coach also mentioned that other injured players, including Nico Williams and Mikel, should be fit for the first game or shortly thereafter.

Coach’s Statement on Injuries

De la Fuente acknowledged the pressure of current injuries but remained confident in the team’s recovery timeline. He stated, “I think we’ll have Lamine, Nico, and Mikel available for the first World Cup match, and if not, we’ll have them for the second or third. It doesn’t cause any major problems.”

Regarding Nico Williams, who has a similar hamstring issue, De la Fuente noted that his injury is less severe and that he should return in 3-4 weeks. This timeline aligns with Spain’s first match in the tournament.

Spain’s Group Stage Matches

Spain’s World Cup group stage matches are set for June 9th against Cape Verde, June 21st against Saudi Arabia, and June 27th against Uruguay. The coach’s comments suggest that the team is preparing contingency plans in case any key players are not ready for the first game.

Despite the injury concerns, De la Fuente remains optimistic that the team will be in good shape for the tournament’s start.
