War of words intensifies between Spanish giants

The transfer window is in its final days, and the battle between Barcelona and Atlético Madrid over Julian Alvarez has turned deeply personal, with both clubs now openly trading accusations through the media and official channels.

The feud reached a new peak on Thursday when Atlético's board of directors released an official statement across the club's social media platforms, unanimously supporting the decision to refuse any discussion over the Argentine striker's future.

The members of Atlético de Madrid's Board of Directors have unanimously expressed their absolute support for the club's decision to not negotiate the transfer of Julián Alvarez to FC Barcelona. Atlético de Madrid is open to standard transfer market negotiations when conducted in a professional, ethical and respectful manner. We fully stand behind the club's previously communicated position that FC Barcelona failed to meet these requirements and, as a result, there will not be any negotiation and there is zero consideration of an Alvarez transfer to Barcelona.

The statement added: 'Atlético de Madrid trust that our player will understand the decision and will remain focused on helping the club achieve its goals, just as he has done during the two seasons he has been defending our colors.'

Yuste fires back: 'A red line has been crossed'

Barcelona wasted no time in responding. Vice-president Rafa Yuste hit back at Atlético chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, who had earlier admitted he was 'disgusted' by Barcelona's 'lack of ethics and professionalism' during the summer, and claimed the striker is enduring a difficult period.

Speaking to Movistar, Yuste suggested the Atlético hierarchy had overstepped the mark entirely:

What surprises me is that, knowing Gil Marín, he made these statements. It's rude, disrespectful. I want to say that our president, our sporting department, the entire club, has been an example of hard work and professionalism for many years. These words cross a red line. I don't understand them at all.

Whe asked whether Barcelona had given up on Alvarez, Yuste was coy, offering a thinly veiled warning of further attempts:

The transfer window is closing in a few days, and that's it. I feel terrible about this, truly. What I have to do is defend the club and the professionals, like Deco and Bojan. This is crossing a red line. We respect Atlético as an institution and all footballers in the world. If a player wants to come, we're excited.

Where does this leave Alvarez?

The escalating dispute leaves both Barcelona and Alvarez in a precarious position ahead of the fast-approaching summer transfer deadline. Joan Laporta and co. have long made clear that the Argentine remains their No.1 target to reinforce Hansi Flick's frontline, with Alvarez himself publicly expressing his desire to move on amid the Blaugrana's interest.

Atleti, for their part, have vowed not to sell the attacker to Barcelona this summer under any circumstances, leaving the striker in an awkward spot. Premier League champions Arsenal continue to wait in the wings, reportedly ready to pounce on the opportunity — but it has been reported that Alvarez has no interest in returning to the Premier League.
