When Xavi Espart joined Barcelona's preseason squad following his triumphant campaign at the under-19 EURO with Spain, the widely held assumption was that the teenager would be shipped out on loan once the summer window closed. Regular minutes elsewhere seemed the logical next step in his development. But the 19-year-old has done his utmost to upend that narrative.

Espart delivered two very good performances at right-back — first against Birmingham City and then in the triangular tournament in Italy last week — before being handed a run-out in his natural midfield position against FC Basel on Sunday. He seized the opportunity with both hands.

Against Basel, Espart looked comfortable on the ball, played key line-breaking passes in the final third, and consistently made intelligent reads in space to pop up in dangerous positions. It was, by all accounts, a thoroughly impressive display from a player who has now demonstrated the versatility to perform at a high level in two different roles.

Flick faces a selection dilemma

The performances have not gone unnoticed. New head coach Hansi Flick now faces a genuine decision: does Espart deserve a place in the first-team squad this season, or is a loan move still the right call for his continued development? The German tactician will need to weigh the teenager's readiness against the demands of a grueling campaign across multiple competitions.

At just 19, Espart has already proven he can adapt to different tactical assignments, showing maturity beyond his years. Whether that is enough to keep him in Barcelona's star-studded squad remains to be seen, but he has certainly made the strongest possible case to stay.
