Real Madrid sweep past Schalke 3-0 as Jose Mourinho hails pre-season progress
Real Madrid completed their pre-season campaign in commanding fashion with a 3-0 victory over German side Schalke, leaving manager Jose Mourinho delighted with how his squad is developing ahead of the new campaign.

Kylian Mbappe, Dean Huijsen, and Carlos Espi all found the back of the net as Los Blancos maintained their unbeaten pre-season record, having won each of their final three warm-up fixtures before their upcoming LaLiga opener against Espanyol.
Fast Start for Mbappe
Mbappe needed just six minutes to make his mark in his first outing under Mourinho, taking advantage of an under-hit backpass to calmly slot past Schalke goalkeeper Loris Karius. Huijsen doubled Madrid's advantage 14 minutes later, rising high to head home an Arda Guler corner.
Second-half substitute Espi added a third just before the hour mark after being set up by Alvaro Carreras. The match also saw marquee signing Yan Diomande make his club debut as a substitute shortly after.
Mourinho Praises Squad Unity
Speaking after the comfortable win, Mourinho was eager to highlight the collective progress his team has made throughout the summer.
"Positive. Positive as a team. Positive individually," Mourinho said. "Obviously, some players arrived later and don't yet have the same intensity as the guys who came on the first day. Those who started on the first day have had 30 training sessions and six matches; those who arrived now have had three or four training sessions."
"There's obviously a difference in rhythm, intensity, and stamina… But tactically, the ideas are gradually taking shape. The players have superior quality, incredible quality. We're working very well as a team, with and without the ball."
Mourinho emphasized that the team's readiness for competitive football is arriving at the right moment: "I think it was a very good test, a very good final training session before the real work begins, because the real work is competing, fighting for points. That's what we love, and we're right there on the verge of it."
"Right now it's difficult to talk about individual players because we're growing as a team. We only have good players, very good players, and extremely good players. From the combined efforts of these players, we have to create a very, very good team, and we're taking the right steps to achieve that."
Huijsen on Defensive Solidity
Goalscorer Huijsen, who impressed on both ends of the pitch and helped secure the clean sheet, praised the squad's work ethic under the Portuguese manager.
"I'm happy with the team's work; we're leaving a good impression," Huijsen said. "We're training hard, running a lot, and being pushed to the limit. That's good for us. Mourinho asks me, as a centre-back, to be solid and try to keep a clean sheet. As a team, he wants us to stay united, play together, and be supportive."
