Sergio Perez Apologizes for First-Lap Collision with Teammate Bottas at Chinese Grand Prix

Sergio Perez driving during the Chinese Grand Prix

Sergio Perez has issued a full apology after an "optimistic" first-lap move at the Chinese Grand Prix resulted in contact between his Cadillac and that of teammate Valtteri Bottas, an incident the Mexican driver called "fully on me."

The collision occurred early in Sunday's race in Shanghai as Perez, starting 22nd on the grid, attempted to pass Bottas, who had started 20th, on the outside through the first corners. With both drivers making good starts and progressing toward Turn 1, Perez spotted a gap and went for the move, but Bottas found himself sandwiched by Nico Hulkenberg's Audi with nowhere to go.

"That was fully on me, I saw the gap and I went for it, Valtteri didn't have anywhere to go," Perez said post-race. "It was very optimistic, so full apologies on that one to Valtteri and the team."

Race Impact and Technical Issues

The contact caused Perez to spin, though he was able to rejoin the field when the Safety Car emerged on Lap 10. The incident proved costly for his race, with Perez finishing 15th while Bottas managed to secure 13th place.

"Unhappily it ended up costing me the race, I spun, I lost a lot of track time," Perez explained. "I came back and was back in the race and I was about to overtake Valtteri on the back straight and then I had deployment issues, losing about five seconds the first time and then the second time, another 15 seconds. So, a bit of tidy up to do in that regard."

Bottas Shows Understanding

Despite the early contact, Bottas displayed no ill-will toward his teammate, noting that such incidents are part of racing. The experienced Finnish driver acknowledged that he was unaware of Perez's position during the crucial moment.

"A bit of a contact but these things happen," Bottas confirmed. "I didn't see him there and actually didn't really have any space. We spoke already, all good."

Bottas emphasized the positive outcome of both cars reaching the finish line, particularly significant given that he failed to finish the previous race in Australia and Perez had experienced reliability issues earlier in the Chinese Grand Prix weekend.

Significant Achievement for Cadillac

The completion of the race by both Cadillac cars represents notable progress for F1's newest team, especially on a day when more established teams faced difficulties. McLaren failed to get either of their cars to the start line, while Williams' Alex Albon and Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto were also unable to participate.

"I'm just glad we both finished, that was the main goal of today and to race Aston [Martin], which we did," said Bottas. "And honestly, really proud of everyone. Second race ever for us in Formula 1 and we got P13 so it is not bad."

Team Management Perspective

Cadillac team representative Graeme Lowdon expressed satisfaction with the team's performance, highlighting the significance of completing their second-ever race weekend with both cars intact.

"We can be very pleased with that result," Lowdon added. "We saw today that the complexity of the new cars has given some experienced teams significant issues, so to get two cars to the finish at the end of our second-ever race weekend is a great achievement for everyone. We can leave this first double-header with our heads held high."

The incident between Perez and Bottas demonstrates the challenges new teams face as they establish themselves in the competitive world of Formula 1, while also showcasing the professionalism of experienced drivers in managing racing incidents.
