In a significant strategic shift, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has announced that Litton Das will now lead the national side in both white-ball formats. The appointment sees Litton take over the ODI captaincy from all-rounder Mehidy Hasan Miraz, consolidating leadership under one captain for the 50-over and T20I formats as the team begins preparations for the 2027 ICC Men's Cricket World Cup.

Prioritizing Performance Over Captaincy

BCB President Tamim Iqbal explained that the decision was primarily driven by the desire to maximize the contributions of Mehidy Hasan Miraz as a player. While Miraz was successful in the role—winning four of the last five series he led—the board believes his primary value lies in his skills as an all-rounder.

“Miraz has been a highly successful captain... But I believe we need Miraz more as a cricketer than as a captain. As a performer, we're used to seeing him at a certain level, and perhaps there had been a slight dip,” Tamim Iqbal stated during a press conference in Mirpur.

The board noted that while Miraz has performed well with the bat, there is still room for improvement in his bowling, and removing the burden of captaincy is expected to help him return to his full rhythm.

A New Leadership Structure

The BCB has moved toward a two-captain system to allow for better specialized planning. Litton Das will head the white-ball operations, while Najmul Hossain Shanto will continue as the red-ball (Test) captain. Additionally, Towhid Hridoy has been named as the white-ball vice-captain, while Mehidy Hasan Miraz remains the vice-captain for the Test format.

Tamim Iqbal emphasized that the board is seeking alignment between formats, adding, “We feel two captains make more sense, one for white-ball cricket and one for red-ball cricket... In the future, we may even move towards having a single captain for all formats.”

Litton Das's Proven Track Record

Though this is his first full-time assignment as ODI captain, Litton is experienced in the role. He previously led Bangladesh in seven ODIs, including a notable 2-1 series victory over India in 2022. A mainstay of the white-ball squad since 2015, Litton holds one of the highest individual ODI scores for Bangladesh with 176 and has accumulated 2,869 runs across 104 matches.

Future Evaluation and Planning

Moving forward, the BCB intends to move away from a culture of reactionary changes. The board will now evaluate the performance of national cricketers and coaching staff on a six-month review cycle. Tamim Iqbal highlighted the need to "bridge the gap that has existed between the board and the players" and move away from rewarding players only when they win series.
