Diplomatic Ties and Cricketing Hopes

Tamim Iqbal, the President of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), has expressed optimism regarding the possibility of hosting the Indian national team in September 2026. The proposed tour, which would consist of three One Day Internationals (ODIs) and three T20 Internationals (T20Is), remains subject to various geopolitical conditions.

The relationship between the two cricketing boards reached a significant low when India previously skipped a T20I World Cup fixture citing security concerns during the tenure of the Yunus-led government. However, a recent invitation from the Government of India to Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for the 18th BRICS Summit in September has sparked a renewed sense of optimism that diplomatic thawing could pave the way for the series.

Tamim's Efforts and Perspectives

Speaking on the current status of negotiations, Tamim Iqbal confirmed that communication channels with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) remain open.

“Unfortunately, I don't have any news regarding the India series. I am in discussions with the BCCI and there's an exchange of emails happening between BCB members, and we are trying from all quarters,” Tamim stated.

Highlighting the passion surrounding the rivalry, he added, “Bangladesh's series against India, the excitement is at a different level, I'm sure from journalists, from fans, cricketers, everyone.”

While acknowledging that the final decision rests beyond his immediate control, Tamim emphasized Bangladesh's readiness to host. “Bangladesh is an extremely safe country, and I am very hopeful that they will come. Whatever steps need to be taken from our side, we are trying,” he noted, adding that his discussions so far have been "very positive."

New Role with ICC Franchise League Committee

Beyond the India series, Tamim Iqbal has also taken on a significant international role as the chairman of the International Cricket Council (ICC) franchise league committee. This committee is tasked with overseeing the governance of franchise cricket leagues globally, ensuring proper processes are maintained, and approving or disapproving leagues based on set criteria.

Tamim described the appointment as a matter of pride for both himself and Bangladesh. He noted that with over 90 to 100 associate members applying for T20 cricket in various leagues, the committee's role in maintaining integrity and structure is vital. “I don't think I should share each and every detail, but this is a very significant committee, and this committee will probably play a very big part going forward,” he concluded.
