George Russell Dominates Azerbaijan GP Opening Practice as Title Leader Kimi Antonelli Suffers Hydraulic Failure

Mercedes driver George Russell set the benchmark in the opening practice session for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, outpacing Red Bull's Max Verstappen as championship leader Kimi Antonelli suffered a disruptive hydraulic breakdown on the streets of Baku.

Russell clocked a fastest lap of 1m 45.387s around the Baku City Circuit, aided by a substantial slipstream tow from Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso down the lengthy main straight. The British driver ended the one-hour session exactly four-tenths of a second clear of Verstappen.

Trouble for Championship Leader Antonelli

Antonelli, who leads teammate Russell by 81 points at the top of the Drivers' Championship standings, initially showed commanding pace by setting the fastest benchmark of 1m 46.265s on the hard Pirelli tyre during the early running. However, his running came to an abrupt halt when he bolted on soft compound tyres.

On his out-lap, Antonelli reported a hydraulic issue as smoke began seeping from the cooling vents on his engine cover. He pulled off the circuit, triggering a Virtual Safety Car period that cost the young Italian more than 35 minutes of crucial track time. Despite missing the second half of FP1, Antonelli's hard-tyre lap proved good enough to finish fifth overall, 0.878s off Russell's ultimate pace.

Ferrari Lurk Close Behind on Medium Tyres

Ferrari's Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton finished third and fourth respectively, just over four-tenths off Russell's leading time. Crucially, both Ferrari drivers completed their flying laps exclusively on medium-compound tyres, suggesting significant untapped performance ahead of qualifying.

Oscar Piastri ended up sixth for McLaren despite losing time in the garage due to early vibrations, while teammate Lando Norris endured a frustrating session that left him down in 14th after being sidelined by mechanical problems.

Racing Bulls duo Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad finished seventh and eighth, ahead of Haas driver Esteban Ocon in ninth and Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto rounding out the top 10. A second Virtual Safety Car was required late in the session when Nico Hulkenberg ground to a halt with a technical failure in his Audi, moments after Lindblad briefly spun into the Turn 7 runoff area.

Williams had a dramatic opening to the weekend with Carlos Sainz returning to the pits with rear brake flames on his heavily updated chassis after only 15 minutes, while Isack Hadjar returned from a three-race injury absence to place 20th following brake and power unit issues with his Red Bull.
