Kansas City complete blockbuster move for USYNT midfielder Owen Wolff

Sporting Kansas City have completed the signing of U.S. youth international midfielder Owen Wolff from Austin FC, sources briefed on the deal have told The Athletic.

Austin will receive $4.5 million up front, plus another $3.1 million in performance-based add-ons, the sources added. It marks the largest cash trade for an Under 22 Initiative player in the brief history of the rule, according to sources.

A breakout star despite injury-hit season

Wolff, 21, has missed time this season through injury, but is widely viewed as one of the league's top young players. He enjoyed a breakout 2025 campaign, notching seven goals and seven assists while appearing in all 34 regular-season games.

The midfielder has already amassed 147 first-team appearances in his career and featured for the United States at the 2023 U-20 World Cup.

Cornerstone of an SKC rebuild

The move is a significant one for a rebuilding Sporting Kansas City, which lands the young player on an Under 22 Initiative deal. Wolff will be a centerpiece of the club's overhaul, which this week also saw club-record signing Andre Luiz arrive in a deal worth an initial $18 million, as first reported by The Athletic.

SKC moved on from midfielder Manu Garcia to open up a designated player slot, and the club is looking to fill that vacancy before the MLS summer transfer window closes on September 2.

Austin continue their own transition

Wolff extended his contract with Austin this winter but expressed an openness to a new challenge, sources said. The sources indicated the deal predates the arrival of Austin's new sporting director Khaled El-Ahmad, as the club continued summer work while El-Ashman officially took over from Minnesota this week.

Austin FC are undergoing a rebuild of their own under head coach Jim Curtin, who took over this winter. The club previously traded midfielder Dani Pereira to CF Montréal for $2.1 million GAM, and further departures are expected when Curtin begins to reshape the roster this winter.
