Brighton have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of "modern" left-back Jaouen Hadjam from Swiss champions Young Boys, the club has confirmed.

The 23-year-old has put pen to paper on a five-year deal in a transfer reported to be worth £9.5m, bolstering a Seagulls backline that has made a strong start to the Premier League season.

Hadjam joined the Swiss side in January 2024 and went on to make 98 appearances in all competitions. Of those, 73 came in the Swiss Super League, where he registered six goals and seven assists from left-back.

Sporting director Xavier Cava is excited by the versatility the Algeria international brings to the Amex Stadium.

"We believe Jaouen will be a great addition to the group, adding to our already strong options in defence," Cava said.

"He is a modern left-back known for his pace, attacking output and technical abilities, which fits our style of play well. He has proven himself to be a versatile player in Switzerland, and we are looking forward to working with him."

Hadjam played for France at youth level before switching allegiance to Algeria in 2023. He has since earned 21 caps for his country and featured at this year's World Cup, where Algeria were knocked out by Switzerland in the round of 32.

The arrival further strengthens Brighton's defensive options as they look to build on a flying start to the campaign and push for another strong finish in the Premier League.
