Inter Miami Nears Casemiro Signing Despite LA Galaxy's MLS Discovery Rights

Inter Miami Pursues Casemiro Amid Discovery Rights Complexities

Inter Miami is closing in on a deal to sign Brazilian international midfielder Casemiro from Manchester United, despite the LA Galaxy holding the priority right to negotiate with him through MLS discovery rights, sources briefed on the situation tell The Athletic.

Casemiro has announced he is departing Manchester United this summer when his contract expires, and Inter Miami is his preferred destination. However, the situation presents a challenge as the LA Galaxy hold the priority right to negotiate with the 34-year-old midfielder, a mechanism called "discovery rights" in MLS.

Galaxy's Efforts and Discovery Rights Dispute

The LA Galaxy were hoping to convince Casemiro to come to Los Angeles and had numerous conversations with the player or his representatives, including multiple contract offers. The discovery rules in MLS are designed to avoid scenarios where multiple clubs are negotiating against each other.

"Typically, these sorts of discovery right disputes are settled by one team compensating the other in a trade for the discovery rights," according to sources. A similar situation unfolded two summers ago with Marco Reus, who ultimately signed for the Galaxy after Charlotte FC held his rights and attempted to sign him. In that case, the Galaxy paid Charlotte $400,000 in General Allocation Money for the rights.

Roster Challenges for Both Clubs

Both Inter Miami and the LA Galaxy face roster constraints. Miami does not have an open designated player slot to sign Casemiro, meaning his contract will be under $2 million for this season at least, unless one of the team's three DPs departs this summer — Lionel Messi, Rodrigo De Paul, or German Berterame.

The Galaxy also do not have an open DP spot. Sources indicate the deal would likely be structured with a non-guaranteed option that would elevate Casemiro to DP status when roster space becomes available. Miami set a precedent for this approach when it signed Jordi Alba to a Targeted Allocation Money deal in 2023. Alba eventually became a DP before retiring.

Casemiro's Standout Season at Manchester United

Casemiro enjoyed a renaissance season for Manchester United, scoring nine goals while starting 33 matches. He was pivotal to the team securing Champions League football for next season, as the club will finish third in the Premier League.

"He was pivotal to the team securing Champions League football for next season," the report notes. Casemiro joined Manchester United in the summer of 2022 from Real Madrid, where he had an iconic run of winning the Champions League five times (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2022) and three league titles. He has 84 caps for the Brazilian national team.

World Cup Ambitions

Casemiro will be a key player for Brazil at the World Cup this summer, having been named to Carlo Ancelotti's final squad this week. MLS will take a six-week break for the World Cup after this weekend's fixtures.

Inter Miami's Current Season Struggles

Meanwhile, Inter Miami, the reigning MLS Cup champion, sits fourth in the league with 28 points after 14 matches but has endured a tumultuous title defense. Head coach Javier Mascherano departed the club earlier this season, with Guillermo Hoyos taking over as interim head coach. The club was also eliminated from the Concacaf Champions Cup in the round of 16 by Nashville SC.
