Bayern Munich opened their two-game tour of Asia with a hard-earned 2-1 friendly victory over K-League side Jeju SK on Tuesday, with teenagers Felipe Chavez and Bastian Assomo grabbing the goals on a night when Vincent Kompany placed his faith in youth.

With many of Bayern's star names given additional time off following the World Cup — France duo Michael Olise and Dayot Upamecano among those absent from the squad — Kompany named a youthful starting XI in South Korea, handing the captain's armband to home favourite Kim Min-jae.

Young forwards make their mark

It took just 11 minutes for the Bundesliga champions to go in front. Jeju failed to deal with a corner, and 19-year-old striker Chavez stroked home left-footed to open the scoring.

The hosts hit back only five minutes later, and Kim could do nothing to prevent a wonderful piece of skill from Matheus Aias. The Brazilian pulled off an audacious rainbow flick over Kim's head inside a crowded penalty area before offloading for Lee Chang-min to finish — a glorious equaliser that gave the home fans a notable moment to celebrate.

Bayern nearly gifted Jeju a second when Hiroki Ito's back pass flew beyond the stranded goalkeeper Jonas Urbig and rolled narrowly wide of the post, before Chavez and Tom Bischof drew a double save from Jeju goalkeeper Heo Ja-woong.

Assomo, 16, settles it before the break

Heo could do nothing to stop Bayern re-establishing their lead four minutes before half-time, however. Sixteen-year-old Assomo received Joao Palhinha's reverse pass on the edge of the area and whipped his shot inside the near post to make it 2-1.

Both Chavez and Assomo caught the eye with pinpoint finishes, and their underlying numbers backed up the impression — they had four shots apiece, with no other player on either side attempting more than three.

Senior reinforcements seal the win

Joshua Kimmich and Jonathan Tah were among the senior Bayern players introduced in the 62nd minute, shortly after Urbig had made a decent save to thwart Choi Byung-Wook. Bayern continued to monopolise possession without truly threatening until Luis Diaz headlined another triple substitution, with the Colombian denied a late third goal by Joo Seung-min's sprawling save.

In total, Bayern fired off 25 shots, though they were wayward with all but five of those attempts and underperformed their expected goals figure of 2.64 xG. Jeju, by contrast, managed just 0.34 xG, but Kompany's young side still had to work for their victory.

Bayern's tour of Asia continues on Friday, when they face Aston Villa in Hong Kong.
