Fire in Locker Room Forces Postponement of Swiss Super League Match Between Thun and Basel
A fire broke out in the first-team locker room at FC Basel's home ground, St. Jakob-Park, on Friday evening, resulting in the postponement of their Swiss Super League fixture against FC Thun scheduled for Saturday, April 11, 2026.
FC Basel issued a statement confirming the incident, noting that while no one was injured, the blaze caused significant destruction. The fire "completely destroyed" the changing area, with extensive property damage to players' football boots, jerseys, and medical equipment. Additional areas impacted included the coaches' office, team manager's office, physiotherapy rooms, showers, and toilets, exacerbated by large amounts of smoke.
"Due to the damage incurred and the lack of usable match and medical equipment, FC Basel is unable to play the away match against FC Thun on Saturday, April 11, 2026," the club's statement read.
The Swiss Football League approved Basel's request to postpone the match, originally set for 8:30pm local time at Thun's Stockhorn Arena. The source of the fire remains unclear, and Basel is cooperating with relevant authorities. The affected area has been sealed off, and local police have been contacted for further comment.
Details on rescheduling the fixture will be announced in due course. Currently, Thun leads the league by 11 points, while Basel sits in fourth place. As one of Switzerland's most successful clubs with 21 league titles, Basel is next scheduled to play at home against Sion on April 26, 2026.
