Antonelli's Back-to-Back Wins Earn Praise from Bottas and Enter History Books

Young Italian Sensation Makes History with Consecutive Wins

Kimi Antonelli has solidified his status as Formula 1's newest star by becoming the first teenager to record multiple Grand Prix victories, following back-to-back wins at the Chinese and Japanese Grands Prix. The 19-year-old Mercedes driver has also become the youngest driver ever to lead the World Championship, sitting nine points ahead of teammate George Russell after his Suzuka triumph.

Bottas: 'Just a Matter of Time'

Former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who spent five seasons with the Silver Arrows and served as the team's Reserve Driver last season, expressed his admiration for Antonelli's breakthrough performance. "I was really happy to see that, Kimi getting his first win. I think it was just a matter of time with the machinery they have this year, and he just had a solid weekend – very good Qualifying, very good race, and got the win," Bottas said.

The Finnish driver, who recorded 10 wins during his time at Mercedes, added: "He's definitely grown a lot – he's still very young and gaining experience from every weekend, but I was always expecting him to kind of make a step from year one to year two, and it seems like he has been able to do that so it's really good to see."

Triumph Over Adversity

Antonelli's journey to the top hasn't been without challenges. His rookie season featured dramatic highs and lows – from scoring Sprint pole in Miami and his maiden podium in Canada to multiple crashes and a difficult run of form throughout the European portion of the season. At one point, he failed to score in six of seven Grands Prix around his Canadian podium.

However, the Italian found his form late in his debut season, taking back-to-back podiums in Brazil and Las Vegas, which helped Mercedes secure second place in the Constructors' Championship behind McLaren.

His second season has started with remarkable consistency. After backing up Russell's win in Australia with a P2 finish, Antonelli went on to win the next two races in China and Japan, while also finishing fifth in the China Sprint. Despite a crash in final practice in Melbourne, he demonstrated significant maturity by bouncing back from the incident.

Historic Achievement

With his consecutive victories, Antonelli has joined an exclusive club of F1 drivers who have followed up their maiden victory with a second win at the very next race. This achievement places him alongside legendary figures like Alberto Ascari, who accomplished the feat back in 1951.

Japanese Grand Prix Comeback

Perhaps most impressive was Antonelli's performance in Japan, where he demonstrated remarkable composure. After starting from pole position, a poor start dropped him down to sixth on the opening lap. However, the teenager kept his nerve and fought his way back through the field to secure victory.

Bottas revealed he sent Antonelli a message of congratulations after the race, stating he was "really proud" of the youngster. The paddock has been impressed with how Antonelli has started the 2026 season, showing significant growth from his rookie year.

As Antonelli leads the Championship standings, all eyes are on whether the Italian sensation can end his country's long title drought and maintain his impressive form throughout the season.
