Barcelona complete signing of Joao Cancelo on free transfer until 2029
FC Barcelona have officially confirmed the signing of defender João Cancelo on a free transfer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal, marking the Portuguese international's third stint with the Catalan giants.

Unlike his previous two loan spells in Catalonia, Cancelo has joined Barcelona on a permanent basis, committing his future to the club through June 30, 2029.
The club released an official statement to confirm the arrival:
“Agreement reached between João Cancelo and FC Barcelona for the Portuguese player to join. The fullback arrives as a free agent and signs a contract up to 30 June 2029.”
Cancelo took pay cut to force move
Speaking following the announcement, the 32-year-old fullback revealed the extent of his determination to secure a return to the Blaugrana, stating that he sacrificed part of his salary to terminate his contract with Al-Hilal.
“I’m very happy, I’m very pleased to be here, I’m where I want to be. I trained separately for a week. I told Deco that either I came here or I’d spend a year there without playing, still getting paid,” Cancelo said.
“I gave up part of my salary, but it was either sign for Barça or nothing. It’s a very special club, I’m here to help and I hope to win many titles. We’re building a great team.”
The experienced Portuguese international is expected to feature as Hansi Flick’s primary choice at left-back, where he will compete with Alejandro Balde for a starting spot across the upcoming campaign.
