Maddison Limps Off as Tottenham's Injury Crisis Deepens in Chelsea Derby Defeat
Tottenham's No 10 Struck Down Again at Stamford Bridge
James Maddison has suffered another injury setback in a gut-wrenching blow for the Tottenham midfielder, forced off early in the second half of Spurs' London derby with Chelsea on Saturday afternoon.
The 29-year-old went down soon after the restart at Stamford Bridge, crouching and looking towards the bench before hitting the deck as his team-mates signalled for the club's medical staff to come onto the pitch.
Maddison walked off the field visibly dejected and was replaced by former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher, who was booed by the home crowd as he entered play. The injured playmaker went straight down the tunnel after being substituted, receiving a pat on the back from opposition manager Xabi Alonso as he departed.
De Zerbi Braced for Medical Verdict
Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi now faces another nervous wait to learn the extent of Maddison's latest problem, adding to the club's mounting woes in the medical department.
"I think it's not a very important problem," De Zerbi said in his post-match press conference. "We need to make the medical check. I hope it is not a big problem because he's a special player for us."
The Tottenham boss was also forced to field questions about his medical staff after a string of injuries, but offered them his full backing.
"It's football. I am convinced our medical staff this season is high level," he said. "I follow them. I believe in them. I have big confidence because I know how they are working. I think they are good enough to believe in them. Nothing more. We are suffering a normal situation in football."
A Career Dogged by Fitness Problems
Maddison has had his entire Tottenham career plagued by fitness issues. He missed 24 games in his debut campaign in north London due to an array of problems before suffering a serious knee injury last term, which ruled him out for eight months.
He only made his first start for the club since May 2025 against Coventry, when the midfielder scored and starred in a 3-1 win — Tottenham's first victory of the season — marking his first start in 526 days after recovering from an ACL tear.
Maddison had already suffered an early injury scare this season when he was forced off in the damning opening-day defeat to Brentford with a shoulder issue, though that setback proved not to be as bad as initially feared.
Injury List Grows for the Trip to Chelsea
Several key players were missing for the visit to Stamford Bridge, with Destiny Udogie absent while Tosin Adarabioyo was unable to recover in time to face his former club. Pedro Porro could only start on the bench as De Zerbi juggled a growing injury list.
Whether Maddison's latest problem proves minor or serious, Tottenham will be desperate for clarity as they attempt to build momentum in a season that has already been defined by absences.
