Sorensen rejects Vancouver 'attacking struggles' as Whitecaps hunt first win in five at Austin
Western Conference leaders Vancouver Whitecaps travel to Austin FC on Saturday looking to snap a four-game winless run, but head coach Jesper Sorensen has moved to bat away any suggestion his side's attack has gone stale.
Whitecaps boss hits back at critics
Vancouver sit top of the Western Conference but have not won in their last four outings, the most recent a goalless draw with second-place St. Louis City SC on Wednesday. Before that, the Whitecaps drew 1-1 with Los Angeles FC — a match in which defender Tristan Blackmon was shown an early red card — and were beaten 3-1 by the Chicago Fire.
Sorensen, however, refused to accept that the team's defensive organisation has suffocated their forward play.
"I don't think that's fair to say," Sorensen said when asked whether Vancouver's defensive strengths are affecting their attacking output. "I think we generated chances [against St. Louis]; it was a difficult team we were up against. Also, considering we played 10 against 11 for almost the entire game in LA, I think we actually produced more chances than you would expect to begin with.
"So, I think the fluidity in our game is okay. We create some good chances; we don't concede much as well."
The numbers offer the Dane some backing. Against St. Louis, Vancouver restricted their high-flying opponents to just eight shots worth 0.8 expected goals (xG). The Whitecaps have also already punched their ticket to the postseason, securing their playoff place after the draw with LAFC.
Sorensen's insistence on high standards is nothing new. In coverage on 26 September 2026, the head coach urged his players to keep their level "extremely high" as Vancouver — then top of the West on 49 points — closed in on a playoff berth, describing that standard as non-negotiable.
Austin braced for in-form Vazquez
The hosts, by contrast, are in disarray. Austin sit 14th in the West and seven points adrift of the playoff places with five games remaining, and they arrive on the back of a 3-1 loss to LAFC that stretched their MLS winless run to four matches.
One bright spot for the Verde is Brandon Vazquez, who has scored in three straight regular-season matches for the third time in his MLS career and the first since his spell at FC Cincinnati in 2022. The only longer streak by an Austin player remains Sebastian Driussi's seven-game run from July to September 2022.
Larraz leading the line — but off target
For Vancouver, midfielder Oliver Larraz was among the few knocking on the door against St. Louis, recording a joint-high four shots and the second-most xG (0.2) despite the team failing to hit the target from 16 attempts. That equalled the second-most shots attempted by a team who failed to land a single effort on target in a regular-season match since 2010 — only Real Salt Lake's 21-shot blank against Houston Dynamo in 2017 was worse.
What the data says
Opta gives Vancouver a 45.6 per cent chance of winning on Saturday, with Austin at 29.6 per cent and the draw at 24.8 per cent. Austin's eight-match unbeaten run was halted by back-to-back regular-season defeats to Nashville SC and LAFC, and the Texan outfit have managed just four wins in their last 18 regular-season matches since early May (D6 L8).
Vancouver, meanwhile, are on their longest winless run in regular-season play since the beginning of the 2025 season (four games). Austin did, however, snap a seven-match winless run against the Whitecaps (D3 L4) with a 2-1 away victory on 13 September — only the Verde's second win in 11 all-time meetings.
