Arsenal edge Como in penalty shoot-out as Fabregas returns to Emirates

Cesc Fabregas made a sentimental return to the Emirates Stadium on Wednesday, though his Como side ultimately fell to Arsenal in a penalty shoot-out following a 1-1 draw in their pre-season encounter.

Early Pressure and Breakthrough

The Gunners began the match with high intensity, nearly scoring in the opening minutes when Piero Hincapie cleared a Gabriel Magalhaes header off the line. Shortly after, Gabriel Jesus hit the post from a tight angle following a defensive mix-up by the visitors.

Arsenal finally broke the deadlock in the 33rd minute. A mistake from goalkeeper Jean Butez saw the ball fall to Myles Lewis-Skelly, whose header was cushioned back by Gabriel Martinelli, allowing the teenager to apply a composed finish and put the hosts ahead.

Como Fight Back

The lead was short-lived, however. Just ten minutes later, Martin Baturina beat two defenders with a sublime run before lashing the ball home to level the score at 1-1.

The second half saw several changes, including the half-time debut of Bruno Guimaraes, who joined the club for £75m. Fabio Vieira and Cristhian Mosquera both had efforts saved, while Kai Havertz saw a late goal disallowed for offside.

Shoot-out Drama

With the score tied at the end of normal time, a penalty shoot-out was held to determine the winner. David Raya, returning to action after Spain's World Cup campaign, proved pivotal by making a crucial save after Noni Madueke missed his effort. Christos Tzolis then stepped up to slam home the winning spot-kick, securing a 4-3 victory for the Premier League champions.

Lewis-Skelly Silences Critics

The match provided a strong platform for Myles Lewis-Skelly, who has recently been the subject of transfer speculation linking him to Chelsea and Manchester United. Despite the arrival of Guimaraes, Lewis-Skelly showcased his value with a goal and a perfect passing record, completing all 22 of his attempted passes.

Arsenal now turn their attention to the Community Shield, where they will face Manchester City.
