Kapil Dev Laments Virat Kohli's Test Retirement, Suggests Emotional Control Could Have Extended Career

A Legendary Captain's Perspective

More than a year after Virat Kohli announced his departure from Test cricket, the decision continues to be a point of contention among cricket enthusiasts and legends. 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev recently joined the conversation, admitting his disappointment and suggesting that the former India skipper still possessed the requisite skill to compete in red-ball cricket.

Virat Kohli and Indian Cricket

The Role of Temperament and Patience

Kohli concluded his illustrious 14-year Test journey on May 12, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of 9,230 runs across 123 Tests, including 30 centuries. He remains India's most successful Test captain, securing 40 wins in 68 matches. While Kohli stated he had "given everything" to the format, Kapil Dev believes a change in approach could have altered the outcome.

Speaking to Sports Tak, Kapil remarked: "I wasn't happy when he retired from Test cricket. It's not about 10,000 runs or any milestone. I felt that if he had stayed away from reacting in anger for six months, there was every chance he would have played for India again."

Kapil emphasized that patience and hard work in domestic cricket are the keys to a comeback, regardless of decisions made by selectors or management. "If the selectors didn't pick him, it's okay. If the captain didn't pick him, it's okay. Go back, work hard, score runs in domestic cricket or wherever you play. He would have come back because he still has the ability of a Test match player," the legendary all-rounder added.

Comparing Passion and Performance

The discussion also touched upon Kohli's fiery on-field persona. Kapil drew a fascinating parallel between Kohli and tennis icon John McEnroe, noting that some athletes thrive on confrontation and intensity.

"He had that ability, though sometimes he got a little too enthusiastic. Looking at Virat, I remember John McEnroe. Until he fought, he couldn't produce his best performance," Kapil explained. He contrasted this with the calm demeanors of greats like Rahul Dravid, Sunil Gavaskar, and Sachin Tendulkar, noting that while some let their bat do the talking, others like Kohli and McEnroe embrace the intensity of the challenge.

Looking Ahead

While the door may be closed on his Test and T20I career, Kohli remains a pivotal part of India's ODI squad. He is set to feature in the upcoming three-match ODI series against England, commencing on July 14.
