Government Debunks E20 Fuel Myths: Ministry Issues 10-Point Clarification on Ethanol Blending

Addressing Misconceptions Around E20 Fuel

The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has taken a decisive step to counter viral misinformation regarding India's E20 ethanol-blended petrol programme. In a detailed 10-point clarification, the government has aimed to dispel myths that have caused concern among vehicle owners across the country.

E20 Fuel Clarification News

Scientific Validation and Performance

According to the ministry, extensive scientific studies conducted by premier institutions—including the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Indian Oil, the Indian Institute of Petroleum, and the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM)—have found no evidence that E20 fuel causes engine damage or significantly impairs vehicle performance.

The government noted that during these rigorous tests, only "marginal changes in mileage" were observed, contradicting claims of severe efficiency drops.

Debunking Common Myths

The clarification explicitly rejects several viral claims, stating that E20 fuel:

  • Does not void vehicle warranties.
  • Does not attract insects into the fuel system.
  • Does not allow water to seep into fuel tanks.
  • Is not created by simply mixing sugarcane juice into petrol.

The Ministry clarified that fuel-grade ethanol is manufactured through sophisticated industrial processes and blended under strict quality standards. Furthermore, it emphasized that modern vehicles and the existing fuel infrastructure are specifically designed to handle E20 fuel safely.

Economic and Environmental Impact

Beyond debunking myths, the government highlighted the strategic successes of the ethanol blending programme. The transition has led to substantial national gains, including:

  • Foreign Exchange Savings: Over ₹1.9 lakh crore saved in foreign exchange.
  • Farmer Support: More than ₹1.6 lakh crore paid to farmers.
  • Environmental Gains: A significant reduction in carbon emissions and a decrease in crude oil imports.

Demonstrating rapid progress, India successfully achieved its 20% ethanol blending target in December 2025, reaching the milestone ahead of the original schedule.
