Thompson strike ends Arsenal's unbeaten run as Chelsea claim Stamford Bridge derby

Thompson punishes sloppy Arsenal defending to settle cagey London derby

Alyssa Thompson's emphatic close-range finish proved the difference as Chelsea edged Arsenal 1-0 at Stamford Bridge, ending the Gunners' 20-match unbeaten streak in the Women's Super League and securing derby bragging rights in west London.

The American forward pounced six minutes before the interval after Arsenal were architects of their own downfall, taking advantage of a sloppy piece of defending to fire into the roof of the net from close range. It was a goal that owed much to Keira Walsh, whose powerful strike from distance was initially well kept out by Anneke Borbe, but the goalkeeper was left helpless when Thompson pounced on the rebound.

Arsenal hit the woodwork twice before the break

Arsenal started the brighter of the two sides, with Kyra Cooney-Cross causing problems only to see an early shot blocked by her own team-mate. Kim Little, making her 184th WSL appearance for Arsenal, almost caught Chelsea out when a deflected cross had Hannah Hampton worried, but it struck the crossbar.

Mariona Caldentey also struck the woodwork; Alessia Russo started a fast break, picking out Little on the right, and her switch found the Spaniard, who drilled her low shot against the foot of the near post. The Gunners could not make their early dominance count, however, and were made to pay when Steph Catley's loose clearance was pounced upon in the 39th minute.

Melvine Malard then broke forward on the counter-attack four minutes later, racing down the right with nobody closing her down, but Borbe made herself big to smother the angled attempt.

Arsenal's pressure tells a familiar story

It was a much-improved Arsenal who emerged after the break, with Lisa Baum and Caldentey both forcing Hampton into action. Malard then ghosted between two Arsenal defenders only to flick a close-range effort wide, while Stina Blackstenius raced in behind only to chip over under pressure from Hampton, though the offside flag would have denied her anyway. Chloe Kelly's angled drive was blocked and Russo's shot charged down as the hosts saw out the closing stages for a third WSL win.

The visitors felt they could have had a late equaliser from the spot after a handball by Ellie Carpenter in the box, but nothing was given, with her arm tight to her body when the ball hit her.

Gunners' scoring woes continue

Arsenal's attacking troubles have drawn the eye this season, having netted just two goals in the campaign. Despite piling on the pressure, especially in the closing stages, they never looked likely to get a goal: they registered 18 shots overall but only two of those were on target, and their 1.04 expected goals (xG) tells the story of a lack of spark in the box.

This loss ends Arsenal's 20-game unbeaten league streak, stretching back to October 2025, and they now have only five points to their name at this stage for the second time in the last three seasons, also the case in 2024-25.

Renee Slegers had already beaten Sonia Bompastor twice this calendar year, but the Frenchwoman ensured she came out on top this time, even if she thinks Chelsea could have had more goals after getting seven of their 13 shots on target. Victory takes Chelsea to within two points of league leaders Manchester City at the top of the table, while Arsenal are already seven points adrift ahead of their meeting with the champions on October 4.
