U.S. Consortium Makes Massive €2 Billion Bid to Acquire SSC Napoli

Ambitious Bid for the Partenopei

A high-stakes attempt to bring American ownership to one of Italy's most storied football clubs is underway. An American consortium, led by Underdog Global Partners (UGP), has reportedly made an offer in the region of €2 billion to acquire SSC Napoli from the De Laurentiis family.

SSC Napoli match action

The negotiations, which began approximately six months ago, come at a pivotal time for the club as it prepares for its centenary year. Aurelio De Laurentiis has a legendary tenure at the club, having rescued Napoli from bankruptcy in the third tier in September 2004 and leading them to a historic league title in 2023, ending a 33-year wait.

A Vision for Multi-Sport Expansion

The UGP-led consortium isn't just looking at football. Their strategic plan mirrors the approach taken by RedBird Capital Partners with AC Milan. UGP already holds a majority stake in Campobasso (Italy's third tier) and a controlling interest in Napoli Basketball. The group intends to apply for an NBA Europe franchise ahead of a projected 2027 league launch, effectively turning SSC Napoli and Napoli Basketball into a comprehensive multi-sport operation.

A critical component of the proposal is a commitment to infrastructure. The consortium has offered to privatize and redevelop the Stadio Diego Maradona, addressing a long-standing need for modernization in the club's home ground.

Stalled Talks and Potential Windfalls

Despite the astronomical sum, the deal is far from certain. Sources indicate that Napoli is "not for sale," and negotiations have stalled due to several sticking points raised by De Laurentiis. However, UGP remains persistent in its efforts to revive the talks.

If the deal were to go through, it would represent one of the most significant financial gains in sports history. De Laurentiis acquired the club for less than 2% of the current €2 billion proposal. The profit margin would be comparable to the gain Mark Cuban realized when selling his stake in the Dallas Mavericks.

The Rise of American Ownership in Serie A

A successful takeover would further solidify the trend of North American investment in Italian football. Currently, eleven Serie A clubs are foreign-owned, with nine of those being North American. Recent examples include investments in Cagliari, Venezia, and the sale of Monza to Beckett Layne Ventures.

When contacted regarding the reports, Underdog Global Partners issued a brief statement: “We do not comment on rumour and speculation.”
