Greenwood free-kick keeps Man City's perfect WSL start alive in narrow Charlton win

Alex Greenwood's precise first-half free-kick was enough to earn Manchester City a narrow 1-0 victory over Charlton Athletic at The Valley, as the Women's Super League champions maintained their perfect start to the 2026/27 season.

The club captain opted for precision over power just after the half-hour mark, curling an effort over the Charlton wall and into the bottom-right corner from 25 yards in the 36th minute. It proved decisive, moving Andree Jeglertz's side — at least for now — five points clear at the top of the standings with four wins from four.

David vs Goliath at The Valley

It was a fixture of contrasts: the reigning WSL champions and early league leaders visiting a newly promoted side yet to register a point. City arrived having scored three or more goals in each of their opening three games — the first side to do so since Arsenal in 2021-22 — but were made to work hard for their fourth win.

Jeglertz made six changes from the side that came from behind to beat Liverpool, with Khadija 'Bunny' Shaw and Lauren Hemp starting on the bench after their midweek Champions League exploits. Charlton, under Karen Hills, offered genuine tests of their own.

The Addicks had the better chances in the opening 25 minutes, with Jodie Hutton forcing a leaping save from City No 2 Eartha Cumings, while Cassandra Korhonen nodded an effort straight at the goalkeeper in the second half. City had a penalty appeal waved away when Mary Fowler's shot struck the outstretched arm of Hawa Cissoko, though the officials did not spot it and nothing was given.

Whitehouse keeps Addicks in it

City should have pulled further clear after the restart, but goalkeeper Sophie Whitehouse produced two instinctive saves to deny Gracie Prior and Grace Clinton in quick succession. She was also down low to keep out a late Shaw effort as City searched for a second goal.

Shaw, introduced in the 60th minute, could only head wide of the left post from Carlotta Wamser's delivery. It mattered little, though, as City held on for a fourth league win and kept their first clean sheet of the season in all competitions.

City finished with an expected goals (xG) total of 1.98 from their 19 shots to Charlton's 0.63 from five attempts, with Beth Mead impressing with game-high totals for chances created (four), touches (98) and passes in the final third (47).

'A funny game for Man City'

Writing on Sky Sports, Charlotte Marsh said: "A funny game for Man City. They got the win and kept their first clean sheet, but they hardly overran Charlton. Did they have enough chances to win by more than one goal? Absolutely, but we have seen them play with much more fluidity and connection, scoring goals for fun."

She added: "Then again, it was no surprise to see Andree Jeglertz make six changes with some of his starters not introduced until the second half. Not only have they had two high-intensity games against Liverpool and Bayern in the last eight days, they have the prospect of Real Madrid and Arsenal to come over the next week. Jeglertz will need everyone as fresh as possible, and isn't that the sign of champions that you can come away with a narrow win when you need to?"

Of the hosts, Marsh said: "Charlton, for their part, will be disappointed with a fourth successive defeat, but the performance was far more encouraging. They clearly knew where Man City's weaknesses were — they spotted the defensive spaces and were competitive in midfield — but did not have the quality to exploit it. There might be a reflection of 'a point there for the taking', but that's incredibly hard to achieve against the WSL champions."

What's next

Greenwood's goal was her first in the WSL since April 2024 against Bristol City, and the champions have now emerged victorious in 29 of their 30 WSL games against newly promoted teams — winning eight straight since a 2-1 loss at Liverpool in 2022-23.

Jeglertz now turns his attention to the Women's Champions League, with a tie against Real Madrid up next, before Arsenal arrive in the league — a demanding week that will test the depth of a squad the manager has built precisely for such occasions. As Marsh put it: "Both Charlton and Man City will have far bigger tests to come."
