Mayor Mamdani Secures Affordable $50 World Cup Tickets for New York City Residents

In a significant win for local sports accessibility, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has successfully negotiated a rare concession from FIFA, securing 1,000 tickets to upcoming World Cup matches priced at just $50 for NYC residents.

A Victory for Affordability

The $50 seats are among the cheapest available in the primary market, representing a massive reduction from standard pricing. For comparison, Category 3 seats for matches at MetLife Stadium have recently been priced as high as $315 for Brazil vs. Morocco and $415 for round of 16 games.

The initiative is a fulfillment of a campaign promise made by Mayor Mamdani, who argued that FIFA's high pricing models "threaten to price out the very people that make this game so special." He emphasized that "it is the place of leaders to step up when we see profit as the only motive."

Ticket Details and Distribution

The 1,000 tickets will be distributed via a ballot system to New York City residents over the age of 15. The allocation covers seven matches at MetLife Stadium, including five group-stage fixtures, a round of 32 tie, and a round of 16 game. However, the allocation does not include the World Cup final on July 19.

To prevent scalping and resale, the tickets are non-transferable and will be distributed to winners on the day of the event at the bus departure site. Each winner can purchase up to two tickets. Additionally, the program includes free round-trip bus travel to the stadium.

The Negotiation Process

The deal was the result of direct negotiations between Mayor Mamdani and FIFA President Gianni Infantino during a meeting at City Hall in March. Sources indicate that FIFA was initially reluctant to agree to the plan, fearing it would set a precedent for local politicians to create their own resale markets that could undercut FIFA's pricing.

The tickets were ultimately released from the allocation held by the joint host committee for New York and New Jersey. Maya Handa, Mamdani's World Cup czar, stated: "This program exists because the mayor was determined to make sure working New Yorkers would be in the stands... A kid in the Bronx, a security guard in Queens, a restaurant worker in Brooklyn or Staten Island — they are going to walk into the stadium this summer because their city fought for them to be there."

Further Community Initiatives

Beyond the ticket deal, Mayor Mamdani is introducing other ways for locals to engage with the tournament:

  • Soccer Streets: 50 car-free blocks near NYC public schools will be transformed into mini-pitches and community event spaces.
  • Free Fan Zones: Activations will be available across the five boroughs, including Rockefeller Center, Brooklyn Bridge Park, and the Bronx Terminal Market.

While New Yorkers benefit from this specific ticket program, New Jersey residents do not have a similar political request in place, though the regional host committee has provided financial support for commuters impacted by tournament disruptions.
