McLaren driver completes decisive Turn 1 move

ZANDVOORT — Lando Norris did not want to waste any time. With a fresh set of tyres after a slick pit stop, the reigning Formula 1 world champion quickly closed on Kimi Antonelli, the current championship leader, on the tight and twisty Zandvoort circuit hosting its final Dutch Grand Prix.

Overtaking is notoriously difficult at Zandvoort. Norris pounced at Turn 1 when Antonelli moved inside to defend, hanging his McLaren around the outside and using fresher rubber to shoot clear for the net lead. He then made another move on Lewis Hamilton, who still had to pit again, later in the same lap to regain a lead he would not relinquish.

"Let’s keep pushing!" Norris told his team on the radio after crossing the line. "Thank you for the hard work. Let’s keep bringing upgrades, let’s keep bringing performance, please. The fight’s still on, let’s keep going." Race engineer Will Joseph replied: "Sure is, mate. Two in a row, let’s make it many more."

Strategy and tyre advantage decide the race

McLaren had chipped away at Mercedes’ pace in recent races with new parts and a better understanding of its customer power unit. Norris had been in position to win in Hungary ahead of the summer break, and the teams were close again at Zandvoort after George Russell’s sprint win on Saturday.

Norris took a brilliant pole on Saturday, but lost the lead at the second standing start after the red flag when Antonelli dived up the inside. The McLaren stayed in touch, and after both cars moved to the hard compound Norris began to close the gap. A brief scare at Turn 13 from a tailwind was quickly recovered.

Mercedes tried to undercut by pitting Antonelli earlier, forcing Norris to stay out. McLaren extended Norris’s stint, bringing him in seven laps later when Antonelli was already struggling for grip. Norris carved into a five-second lead, taking 1.5 seconds in one lap and sealing the pass at Turn 1.

McLaren team principal Andrea Stella said the move showed Norris’s growing assertiveness: "He is expressing a higher level of assertiveness. The maneuver to pass Antonelli today is a really good demonstration of that. He’s demonstrating more self-confidence."

Team orders and Mercedes’ title concerns

Norris finished 11.5 seconds ahead of Antonelli, who reclaimed second after Mercedes issued team orders. Russell was running second as a result of a virtual safety car, but was told to let Antonelli through.

"We had a free stop with Kimi — a team internal free stop — and George was incredibly at the end fighting and also fending off the Ferraris, who were on a much quicker car," Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said. "Was really, really exceptional. That looks difficult on the outside but not on the inside. It's a situation we discussed very often… we're not going to lose time fighting with each other and have two Ferraris breathing down our neck."

Russell called the decision "the right decision" and said Antonelli deserved second. Antonelli thanked his team-mate but added: "I still think we put George at risk with having to let me by and everything."

Wolff also confirmed Antonelli will take a grid penalty at Monza due to a planned engine change, and cast doubt on Mercedes having enough budget to respond to McLaren’s upswing. "We haven’t got the money to put developments on the car," Wolff said.

Norris is now 83 points behind Antonelli in the standings, but with Verstappen’s late-season comeback last year as a precedent, McLaren believes the fight is still on.
