Sam Hain struck a composed 142 to move Warwickshire within touching distance of a ninth County Championship title after day two against relegation-threatened Leicestershire at Edgbaston.

Warwickshire resumed on 130-4 and eventually reached 372, taking a commanding first-innings lead of 247 after Leicestershire had been dismissed for 125. Hain’s innings came from 301 balls and was his 21st century in first-class cricket, while it also took him beyond 1,000 first-class runs for the season.

Ed Barnard provided crucial support with 88, sharing a fifth-wicket stand of 165 with Hain across 50 overs. Barnard fell 12 runs short of his century when he edged a drive at a wide delivery from Ben Green, but Warwickshire continued to build their advantage through useful contributions from Kai Smith, Manny Suthar, Ethan Bamber and Olly Hannon-Dalby.

Hain reached his hundred to a standing ovation from a large Edgbaston crowd before finally being dismissed for 142. His innings ensured the Bears secured the substantial lead required to put the title firmly within reach.

Bamber strikes again as Leicestershire struggle

Leicestershire began their second innings positively through Sol Budinger, who hit an unbeaten 43 from 36 balls. But Ethan Bamber soon changed the mood, dismissing Sheridon Gumbs and bowling Rishi Patel in the space of three deliveries.

After a stoppage for bad light, Chris Woakes removed Steve Eskinazi leg before wicket in the gloom. Leicestershire closed on 55-3, still trailing by 192 runs, with Bamber having taken two more wickets to raise his season tally to 66.

A draw would be enough for Warwickshire to claim the championship. However, with Leicestershire under sustained pressure, the home crowd will hope the Bears can finish the job on the third day without needing a fourth.
